Larabee, its a fiasco

Last week, we learned that Patrick P. Gelsinger will leave Intel for EMC and tried to find out the reason for the move. From one side, the move had perfect sense. Pat was one of Andy Groove's men, and Paul Otellini did his best to surround himself with his aces, thus the choice of Sean Maloney was logical.

But the underlying issue wasn't that Pat was "Andy Groove's men", the issue was the war with nVidia and under-delivering on Larrabee.

I wonder if any what application larabee could have in the tight competitive gpu market if by the time it is released even low end cheapo ati and nvidia cards will be able to outperform it in most tasks. Seems its the very fundamental architecture of larabee being a multicore pentium1 hybrid that is there problem, a jack of all trades and a master of none.

Maybe intel should just scrap it.

They've dunked too much money into it. You can't just go scrapping big plans like this all willy nilly because they don't seem to be doing well at first. Look at the ps3. Everybody said that Sony should have scrapped it, now look at the position the ps3 is in now. sony expects it to outsell the xbox 360 2:1.

dunking so much money into it is good reason to scrap it. costs just keep going up with this chip and theres no no payoff in the foreseeable future.

any smart company would cut their losses and shift development elsewhere.

Different situation. While cell processors are not ideal and hard to program for, compared to the 360s processor it is not several fold weaker, unlike the larabee which as every indication suggests will be several fold weaker then the competition.

I guess Intel hasn't quite learned their lesson from the Itanium.

Perhaps it'll be nice for the professional market, even though nVidia and ATi have a strong standing there as well, especially now with CUDA on the market.
