Still it'd suck having to buy new ones every time, not to mention the insane noise!

The data transfer speed of USB 2.0 is only 480 mbits/sec though. It'd suck to have them as your HD to say the least.

NOt nearly as fast as an HDD though Plus it feels a lot slower since even a 20MB file takes like 7 seconds to copy itself into a flash drive.

thats a windows flaw, trying to buffer the usb transfer, when it doesn't actually have a buffer.

not to mention that by default usb sticks aren't set to performance mode (change it in device manager), they are set to quick removal mode.

Pen drives are not supposed to be used as HD but back up and to transfer data from point A to B.

So does doing that have any draw-backs? Like decreased USB drive life or something?

no, you just have to use the safely remove hardware wizard in the tasktray, before removing it to disable the device, as write caching gets enabled.

I was able to find 500gb 7200.12. So should I go for two of these or 1TB WD black.

2x 500GB sounds like a better option if the cost is the same. One can act as a back-up to another in case of failure (which, although is very unlikely on a brand new HDD, but you still can't rule it out).

Plus if you have multiple computers (or ever have them in the future), it'll be easier to copy/share data as you can just take it out of one and pop it into the other rig.

And I can put them in Raid0 too.

They cost a little less by 4$.

Raid0 is too unreliable....

I also say two 500s though...why? Well you don't lose everything if one goes down, one can serve as the install drive and the other as the storage drive and also two full 500s will be faster than one full 1TB.

No Raid at all, it's fast enough normal. Special configurations are just too unreliable for daily use....all the data on the HDDs is dependant on the configuration, if the configuration fails (which special configurations easily do) then all data is automatically lost.
