why is external modem preffered
can anybody tell me that why an external modem is preffered to an internal modem.does it gives better download speed than internal modem? if so than how much is the difference? or what is the difference between them?

In the good old days an external was preferred because they much easier to setup in comparision to legacy isa ones. Also they were more likely to be hardware based, which meant that your cpu wasn't being tied up as much whilst surfing.
Now there isn't as big a difference since modems now are pci based and practically all modems are software based. Personally I perfer external as it gives me an extra slot on my mobo (after all what else do you plug into a serial port nowadays).
