why is 60 htz dangerous for my eyes ?

I am currently using a 17' monitor
and the resolution I used to use was 1280 / 1024 running at a 60 htz.
but I change that resolution to 1024 / 768 running at a 85 htz.
people at another forum told me 60 htz hurts my eyes but I got no answer back when I asked them " why "
does anyone knows ?

60Hz? Man if I run anything at a refresh lower than 80Hz, my eyes hurt, literally. I don't know the scientific explanation, but if my eyes hurt, it can't be healthy for me Now I'm on 1152x864@100Hz

Its because at anything less than 80 or so herz you can see the screen updating and the resulting "flicker" gives you the headache (I dont know the exact how/why).
Put your screen at 60hz and look away from it so you can see it out of the corner of your eye and the flicker should be very obvious then do the same at 80 or so and it shouldnt flicker.

It differs with people. For some 60 Hz is fine, for others it's unbearable. Me, I have to put it to at least 85 Hz, otherwise I see flickering.

Well, I'm running 800x600 @ 60HZ. I see no flicker. I can't use anything higher because my monitor wont allow it (It's 7 years old! but it works great! ).

Yay 7 year old monitors! Mine looks fine at 60hz, can't do any higher and the screen moves to the left if I go to 1024x768 resolution! WooHoo!
It's SUPER VGA compatible!

I'm more worried that a certain Hz would damage my monitor as my Display applet warns.

I'm using 85Hz and anything below that makes my eyes feel "tired". I used to have a 14" monitor that only allowed 56Hz at 800X600. I either used a lower resolution(640X480@60Hz) or I couldn't stand in front of the monitor for more than an hour.

It's probably due to the limitations of your monitor, or you may be using the wrong drivers. Check your monitor specifications and also try getting updated drivers for your monitor.

The problem may also lie in your videocard. Check that your card has a fast enough RAMDAC to display that resolution at that refresh rate.

"hz" refers to the refresh (or update) rate per second of your monitor. A setting of 60 hz refreshes the monitor 60 times a second.

It'll probably use the safest setting for your monitor (usually 60 hz)

When I try to put my monitor to 1024x768, the screen looks weird and the screen seems to be displayed in 3 columns (it's kinda hard to explain). My monitor claims to support that res but apparently not at least with the windows drivers. I tried getting updated drivers, but I guess my monitor is too old to have other drivers.

some stuff to look at:
1. Your monitor cannot support any frequency higher than 60Hz at your current resolution setting. (Try to see if you have higher freq settings at lower res)

2. Your monitor might require their own set of drivers (pretty much NEVER nowadays), try to go to the manufacturers website or something..
