I think there are 1000bps in a kbp. So if your getting 38.7kbps, I believe that is 38700bps. Am I wrong?

I think it's your ISP, or XP may have set the limit by default to 33600 bps.

Cool

Actually, there's 1024 bits in a kilobit, so 38.7 kbps is equivalent to 39629 bps. The difference between that and 41333 is incredibly small, and is likely do to line noise, or something. I really can't think of any way that the OS would affect your connection speed, since that's completely handled by the modem itself and the phone line. As for what shiori said about XP limiting the speed, while I don't know XP, I've never seen an OS that lets you limit the speed of the modem. The speed can be limited by the init string, but it would be limited to some "normal" speed such as 9600, 14400, 28800, or 33600, and it's unlikely that XP would have a default init string that would limit it anyway (Especially for the multiple modems you tried).

The only possibility I can think of is that Win98 rounds the actual connection speed that it displays somehow, and XP doesn't. The true test isn't your connection speed, but how fast transfers go. Try downloading a file, and see if it's going the same speed as they did in Win98.

Of course, there are quite a few physical changes that can affect the speed of your connection, as well. Maybe one of them happened around the same time you upgraded to XP, and it's just a coincidence. Some of those changes are construction anywhere between you and your phone company's CO (They have to re-route phone lines around the construction, causing more line noise), extra equipment put on the line between your house and the CO (Such as a repeater or Analog-Digital convertor), or of course changes in the phone wiring at your house or at the ISP, or even if the ISP has moved to a new building or something...

I've tested that download speeds, currently with the 38.6kbps (i missed that 6 into 7 back) i have about 4.1k per second and with win98 same modem etc.. i log on at 41333bps and dl about 4.5kbps, I've tried init strings and others to limit the connection speed to get higher but it gets unstable, i dunno why but i seems like xp is more of a cable connection type of OS, correct me if im wrong

yes, it would be quite a coincidence if my isp moved when i moved to xp, but i thought not, because i have another comp that is a win95 it connects exactly the same as before with no differences. So (i'm thinking) it must be XP..

I format my drive then installed by the way..
