ATi vs Nvidia 2008

Seeing how it may otherwise take another month, I decided to take the initiative myself. So hereby the new poll for videocards, and perhaps a couple of nice debates will get started as well.

Also, I would like to see people giving a reason for their preference, at least, if there is one

Cheers!

I have been going with intel+nvidia for several years, and i take comfort in the fact that i rarely have any hardware-related probs, aside from my pals with other combinations. Sure, i might have been lucky with my choice of parts aswell.. but it just feels workable and sensible going intel+nvidia for some reason

(oh, and ati-linux support is a shame in comparisson)

Stickied.

I've always liked Nvidia. And contrary to what most people feel, I think they still have good video cards with the GTX260/280, but if I was in the market for something new right now, I'd probably get a 4870.

2008 still hasn't ended but i'd give slight edge to ATi. Their 3xxx and 4xxx series of cards came out of nowhere and suprised the heck out of me.

After 8800GT, Nvidia didn't put out anything that interested me.

ATI wins right now. It's just that I'm content with the 8800GTX, although dissapointed (and slightly frustrated)with the drivers.
If my video card would die right now, I wouldn't hestitate and immediately get an ATI. Would save me some cash on power usage too, probably =P

...and I've been an nvidia user for years now, ever since the decline of 3dfx (I still think 2 voodoo2's (sli) was the most awesome setup I ever had though).

nVidia's UMAP policy, heating issue in laptop GPU, naming convention, and renaming/recycling cards get negative points from me.

Its to bad Matrox isn't around that much anymore. They still sell some of their videocards. Their triple header tech was pretty awesome a couple years ago if you had lots of cash to splurge.

I vote for nVidia... even though I own a HD4870. Reason:
- CUDA
- PhysX
- Proper OpenGL!
- Proper GSDX performance!
- And if I'm in for some suicide runs, a single GTX 260 overclocked can break 20K in 3DMark06. ;p
- Low fan noise compared to HD48xx series.

That, too. Not like it's very much needed... but it's a nice feature to have.

for a long time i really liked nvidia, but right now im regretting my gtx 260 purchase. i really liked the 4870, its got good gddr5 memory, HDMI interface, and its cheaper than a gtx260. however, i do like nvidia still due to above reasons. so i guess im pretty even between the two.

I might just trade my HD 4870 for a GTX 260... really... because CUDA is quite tempting to me. So that said, even if I'm owning the best that ATI has right now, I'm still leaning towards nVidia.

well, my local prices have been revised

Before
GTX280 899
GTX260 499
HD 4870 449

After
GTX280 699
GTX260 449
HD 4870 349

....also makes the 8800GT(512MB) rediculously cheap at 239

9600GT is 169 >.< i might soon have the cash to start buying a new system..... heres hoping.

I bet you'd love eBay more if you know that you can potentially get a HD4870 for $160 shipped now. No joke. A HD4850 can only be taken down to $100 shipped, sadly.

Again... Live Search cashback. ;p Heck, here're the step-by-step instructions:
- Go to live.com, and search for "eee"
- Click the link that says that you can get 25% cashback on eBay purchases with Paypal.
- That will bring you to an eBay page that says "for eee" in the search bar.
- Clear that "for eee" line and type in "hd 4870" instead.
- Now look for an HD4870 deal that has a "Buy it now" option
- Click the "Buy it now" button, and if that one has cashback enabled, it'll tell you so, and sometimes, it'll even tell you the amount of cashback you can get. (Note: most would work, but some don't work for special reasons)
- Now apply the eBay 10% or 20% off coupons that you've accumulated in your account, and you will see drastic drops in prices.

That's all. Note: cashback takes 60 days before you can redeem it to your paypal account. That's so that you can take the time to thoroughly test the item and return it and such.

Oh yeah, and I should tell you that it only works when you are a long-time eBay user.
