the Server version has the services optimised, so less useless things are running, it also has some performance options enabled by default that aren't enabled in Vista, this allows it to gain higher scores in benchmark tools, and games

PhysX Performance with GeForce

I've got a 8800gtx and a 8800gt in my second rig. 8800gtx + 8800gt(PhysX) would seem to work quite nicely for Phyx enabled applications.

I'm still not sold on physx quite yet. I'm not going to stick with nvidia just because they have the physx perk on their cards...and currently that's all it is, a perk. Do I see physx support for Far Cry 2? Fallout 3? Physx support is still absent from blockbuster titles.

But I guess by the time physx is mainstream It'll be time for me to upgrade my video again (2 years hopefully), and then I might switch back to nvidia. Or AMD/ATI might develop their own technology that trumps physx.

Or you can just get a PhysX card for an extra $60.

You don't need to be sold. It's free. I think it's an interesting "perk" as it does show from those benchmarks what GPU physics can do over standard CPU physics performance.

I'll run some tests next week when the software is released.

Ok, you are right. I should I have clarified, the technology is free, but requires an nvidia gpu to run. Right now, i'm more inclined to go ATI because my dollar goes further.

I guess it isn't possible to "game" on an ATI card, and use an nvidia as a dedicated PPU?

Doesn't look like it at this point, but it's probably possible and more likely if AMD/ATi also jumps on board to support CUDA/PhysX. I think the technology is very interesting because it's flexible enough to allow you to use it on a single GPU, the CPU, or multiple GPU's in 2 different configurations.

SLI:
GPU1 + GPU2 - both process Physics with work split between both

SLI Alt:
GPU1 - does all GPU video rendering
GPU2 - does all Physics processing

Luckily, I have an extra 8800gt to spare and judging from the recent benchmarks, that configuration works quite well with PhysX.

Yeah i have an 8800gtx but was planning on getting an ATI card next...the 4870X2 beats the pants off a gtx 280 and should cost the same.

I hear some rumors of Far Cry 2 supporting PhysX. And for those who have Nvidia cards, you can actually get the phyx software now.

PhysX_8.07.18_SystemSoftwe.exe - FileFront.com

I'm downloading the Warmonger and UT3 physX maps. Both can be downloaded at filefront.

And just as a side note, that PhysX drivers set needs to be installed on Windows Server 2003 for 3DMark Vantage to launch properly. ;p

Lame sidetrip, especially for someone like runawayprisoner.....

Benchmarks for the GeForce 9500GT :
NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT Performance Preview

Since the average prices for the 9500GT seems to be in the $100 range..... For me I'd rather buy the Radeon 3850. Plus the fact that the 3850 supports DX10.1.... The 9500GT doesn't......

Apparently Assassin's Creed supported dx10.1 but then they removed it in a patch :/ apparently due to some "shove" from nvidia bc their cards don't support dx10.1, and it's a "way it's meant to be played game".

Oh who cares about nVidia?

Give me PhysX support on 4800, and you'll see 10,000+ scores!

No, it was because it was broken to the max, any speed improvement people were seeing on AMD cards was due to alot of effects missing from the 10.1 code path.

PhysX GPU Acceleration on Radeon Update
i don't think hes bull****ting either RAP

Welcome to the world of fanboyism, marketing, deals and false facts.

It's all the above that made 17 people vote for NVIDIA so far... ATi/AMD is currently kicking NVIDIA's ass yet people aim for nVidia. Reminds me the times where people were rooting for Pentium 4 CPUs while the equivalent Athlon XP processors (and even Intel's own mobile CPUs) were miles faster and cheaper.

I can't tell the future, but the present is clear and it has Radeon cards all over it. The current circumstances might even force ATi/AMD to fix their messed up drivers to avoid *****ing from unhappy customers... Yay!(?)

actually, Regeneration is pissed at ATi atm, because they won't provide review samples.

A far cry from previous years when it was nvidia that wouldn't provide one O.o.
