I've gotten my laptop's 7950 GTX up to 95 C for a few minutes before, ran perfectly fine .

The correct wording should be "start to throttle" I think. They will just run slower once you hit that threshold. Beyond that... (up to 100C, I believe) you might want to cut the power or you risk frying them or other components.

Talking about which, I believe nVidia had some problems with materials earlier, but they tried to cover it all up, and the end result was that most major notebook/laptop manufacturers had GPUs that would fry themselves at around 70C or so... and in the process, kill other components as well. It cost them millions, and the trust of notebook/laptop manufacturers... hence you mostly see ATi chips in the mobile segment nowadays. If you see anything from nVidia, it's either GeForce 9400M or GeForce 9600M.

Or GTX260M in the ridiculously over-priced Alienwares and some of the higher-end ASUS gaming notebooks :P

wow, to have a gpu fry at 70C is crazy, Mines idles at 59C and it gets to 90C frequently when gaming. No problems or throttling yet though.

The mobile 8 series reportedly had faulty thermal diodes which led to temps waaay above 70C. For nVidia mobile GPUs, the cooling fan is supposed to kick on and gradually run faster and faster until it can keep the GPU's temperature in check. If the fan is unable to, then the GPU's drivers will kick in and begin forcing the GPU to throttle its clock speed. Both of these functions require a properly working thermal diode.

As for the article, there isn't a single mobile HD4000 series available anywhere. Manufacturers have thus far announced their support for ATI, but haven't actually dropped nVidia in favor of it.

I recently "discovered" that the mobile HD3000 series has been around for a while but the only platforms I could find it on were the AMD Turion CPU-based platforms. This is why it took me so long to find out. I generally look at the high-end notebooks from companies like Sager and I haven't seen a mobile ATI GPU in the high-end segment since prior to the acquisition of ATI by AMD. I remember that the X1800 was ATI's champ, but then ATI fell quiet as both businesses stabilized afterward.

there's already some laptop with hd4000 ( lots with hd3000), only some have AMD processor, for exemple nvidia had 9000's for a long time and now that the 100 came out the 200 came out too, so 100 was probably hold back, might happened the same thing with hd4000 ( so company's could sell more hd3000 before the new generation came out) or didn't come out long enough so it can be in most ati graphic card laptop.

Really?

Even ATI doesn't provide any manufacturer links to laptop models with mobile HD4000s. lol

I just did a quick search on Newegg for laptops containing a Mobility Radeon 4870 X2, 4650, 4570, or 4330 and ended up with 32 results. That's more than I expected .

Actually, I see plenty of HD4k series laptops everywhere. Still quite a few nVidia as well, but I think they really messed up with that production error in one of the metals used.

My biggest problem is that nVidia rebranded its cards, again, and I really don't have a single clue what it would mean if a laptop has a mobile GT105 in it. I'd pick ATi right now simply because it's the only way to be sure to know what you actually buy. There's no consistency with nVidia in neither quality nor naming.

waste of money.
the 5xxx series is just the 4xxx series with doubled specs and a poorly performing tesselator tacked on.

I don't see it as a waste at all. and since I haven't upgraded in over 3 years, going all out with the fastest card overall right now is a good idea to me. Also 27W idle time compared to 90...that's nice...

It would make you a fool for throwing away money on a card thats likely to be usurped and replaced within the next 3-6 months.

ATI know the current top end 5 cards aren't delivering and are planning a 59xx refresh.

That said, your crazy to buy now when the nvidia 10 series will drive ATI prices into the basement where they belong.
Throwing money at Old technology isn't upgrading. regardless if its got twice the amount of old technology.

Its the early adopters that end up ****ty, when the real new Dx games show up and eat their cards.

ATI threw more shaders at the problem, when the real limitation on tesselation is the rops.
