Not really, it's just an attempted answer to the new ATI card. More like they are just countering again and keeping their crown intact by crippling a GTX285

If ATi is going to drop HD4890 down to the $200 price-range then I'm pretty sure nVidia is going to drop their jaws and bang their heads against a wall made of GTX 275 boxes. Now we have a pretty good ladder of cards in terms of price:

HD 4850
|
V
9800GTX+
|
V
GTX 260
|
V
HD 4870
|
V
GTX 275
|
V
HD 4890
|
V
GTX 280
|
V
GTX 285
|
V
HD 4870 X2
|
V
GTX 295

And I think that's also in terms of performance? Well... more powah to the consumers, I guess. Though I'd love to see a single card breaking 60fps in Crysis. A pair of GTX 295 is still...

Probably not. Because it's one of the games that are just does things very diffently I doubt we'll gonna see any hardware in this decade that will run it 60FPS all the time.

It's almost the same thing with GTA 4.

Saints Row 2 is another thing altogether though....

X4...that's still not a single card then...it's a dual card...which occupies the same space as a single card.

Probably something with pure brute force... 1.2GHz GPU core clock and twice the shader processors of the HD4890. Then again, I think I'm talking about an extreme overclocked HD4890 X2 here... (bet this one is going to be a very extreme performer... possibly outtake the GTX 295 even)

An X2 or X4 card would still theoretically be a single card for me (dual-core or quad-core), lest it has more than one PCB, like in the case of the GTX 295.

no RAP. If it's got more than one chip regardless of how it's done then it's dual.

That's why I said "for me". The point is making the most compact performer ever... even if it's bigger than the usual single-slot suspect. As long as it doesn't occupy more than three slots (cooler and heatsink included) then it's fine by my standards. Some motherboards only have a single slot, so... yeah, that's the reason.

rap what are the speculated specs and capabilities of the 5870?

give us every thing you can tell us from the bus width to the memory used, to the memory speed, to the die size, transistor count, dx11 support(?), touted capabilities.... yada yada...

everything and anything

See, there is a difference between "card" and "chip", putting more of the same "chips" on one card doesn't make it several cards.
not exactly, but almost, like a dual or quad-core still is only one processor

Not if it's up to AMD.

I thought Google would be friendly enough?

Leaked: 40nm Radeon HD 5870 to Peak 1.5 TFLOPS - A much smaller die for the GPU, DirectX11 and more to come next year - Softpedia

So... anyway... 1.5TFLOPS.

Imagine... HD4890 would still be at 1.2 - 1.3 with its core clock at 1GHz... one can only "speculate" what kind of "monster" the HD 5870 is.

So my guess is that... nothing short of GDDR5, nothing short of a standard 1GB capacity, nothing short of a 1GHz core clock, but they may "push 'er down" to 800MHz or so to "preserve the WOW factor when you try to overclock". And the memory clocks may well be in the 1GHz range (effective clock 4GHz?) because the HD 4870 with GDDR5 already delivered 120GB/sec and the HD 5870 is speculated to deliver 160GB/sec. But it could also be because of the wider bus... (or actually, it IS because of the wider bus)

25% more shader processors may mean it'll have well over 1000 shader processors... which would be good for Crysis...

And just the thought of the HD 5870 X2 makes me fog up my glasses... (evil scientist mode FTW!) 3TFLOPS, anyone?

But FLOPS aside, I believe it'll be good for gaming, too! <= sounds ironic.

If only ATi could sort out those OpenGL issues...

But wild speculations aside, I think ATi will still have a hard time if nVidia stays competitive. Right now a GTX 295 for $500 is very competitive IMO... considering a HD4870X2 is close to that price tag.

awesome thanks for the info
didn't know i'd find tons with a simple google search on google, but i knew you were the go to guy for tech info so i had to ask

i just hope ati can be ahead in a number of price ranges again with the next generation, so they get back some of the market share they so desperately need. We need both companies equally locking horns neither continuously dominating.
