friends new comp not powering up >.<

So a friend of mine just spent 2k on a new computer....

ASUS P5Q-E
8 GB (4x2GB) of G.skill DDR2 1066 5-5-5-15
ATI Radeon HD4870
Intel Q9450
PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Quad
2 750GB Hitachi 7200rpm drives SATA
2 SATA DVD Burners
Thermaltake Armor Series

Everything is plugged in and double checked (to my knowledge), but whenever the power button is pushed, the lights flicker and then nothing. all the case fans and the cpu fan twitches for a split second, and nothing. I tried unplugging the case fans, still nothing. Cleared the CMOS by moving the jumper, still nothing. This beast must awaken! what should i do to make it happen?

Maybe you have a short somewhere with a case fan. Unhook all the molex cables powering the case fans and see if that fixes it.

Also, make sure 2 PCI-E power cables are plugged into the GPU.e

yes the GPU has two 6 pins going into it. But I will try unplugging all the molex again....

These are the possible problems
1-Memory might be lose....PUSH IN EXTRA HARD!!!!!!!
2-Faulty power supply
3-Incompatible power supply

Of course I don't know to much on the topic so listen to skoreanime.

Sounds like an improperly seated, or incompatible CPU. Also check to make sure that in addition to the 24 pin PSU ->MOBO inserts, there might be an additional 4 or six pin power interface somewhere else near the top of the board. Maybe not though, but worth checking out.

Intermittent power like that has been solved for me by the process outlined.

ugh, it would be a pain to reseat the cpu....

It def. isn't incompatible, the P5Q-E is a brand new board that uses the new P45 chipset; I know it is capable of running the Q9450. We are going to try running the computer with a different PSU first, and see how that goes....

Take off all Molex, and put only 1 RAM module.

Should i be using the SATA power connectors for the SATA hard drives?
Because they can take either molex or the SATA power connector....does it matter?

Make sure you connect the case power button & led, hdd led, reset button ...etc to the correct +/- polarity on the motherboard connection. There should be a little triangle on some of the connector ends. Those should be positive. Also a colored wire usually means positive as well.

so it actually matters what direction those are plugged in...it's not enough that they are plugged into the right places?

I think most of those wires are blue and white...actually i remember that the case manual outlined which ends of the connectors were grounded, +, -, etc. Also the mobo manual has a diagram of where those plug into, and the corresponding +, - designations etc. so that is most likely my problem

Those cables usually have either a white or black colour for the ground (-). Plug that into the - obviously I remember a long time ago that if you didn't plug them in correctly, there wasn't any fail safe to shut off the power, and when I did that with my old IBM, lets just say I had to open the window to let out some smoke

Read, and then re read the manual to double check your wiring is correct. Like carpenters, read/measure twice, cut/plug in once

Yup do what skoreanime says as well. He's going into electronic engineering... so he better know what he's talking about .

most cables it doesn't matter, since they are just + and -, however, for things like Front Audio/USB connections, it does.
