9 Series dumped. 9900GTX is no more!

I bet that turned a few heads

New naming scheme introduced by Nvidia...

Nvidia has decided to depart from its current product naming strategy and introduce a completely new sequence number for its upcoming GT200 chips.
The new GPUs, also knows as NV60 graphics processors, will be called the GTX 260 / 280, according to an The GTX add-on now moves to the front of the sequence number and we assume that future mainstream parts will receive a GTS or GT name, while low-end entry-level parts will end-up with the SE name.
Opinions?

damn i hate this, this is pretty confusing

before it was easy,

it followed this format ABCD "name", for example 8800 GTS

A = Series number
B = Low/Mid/High-range card
C = usually 0, but sometimes 5 on mobile/integrated GPU's
D = always 0 (i think)

anyways, I don't like the new numbering because it dosn't match up with the old numbering sequence.

And larger names like "9900 GTX", are easier to read than smaller ones like "GTX 260"

and is the card called "GTX 260" or "GTX 260 / 280" ??
...because the latter name is retarded.

Personally I find it pretty stupid... But it does make sense to a certain extent for the dumber random customer who doesn't know the difference between a CPU and a GPU...

Wait...so the name GeForce is also gone?

so now it will just be Nvidia GTX 260? (and GT 260 and GTS 260 and SE/LE/you got pwnt for buying this 260)

teh sux0rz

(cotton I am sure they will return to the ABCD naming scheme later...1st gen is kind hard to do though...or alternatively it will be ABC...or something which we can at least somewhat wrap our minds around)

Ah, so Benchzowner was correct

he said this about 2 months back, gt-200 will never be the 9900gtx
I'm going to re-read everything he said from his source

go to extreme systemes and search his name in the 9900 thread

I hope nVidia know what they're doing. It's tough enough to break off from a naming scheme that everyone's familiar and comfortable with, but to introduce a really lame naming scheme?....I hope not.

lol yeah, Cid Highwind thought of that last time

there are some forums out there that makes some threads dedicated to certain card series, it could be disturbing to see:
