HD movie playback on Eee PC

Hmm... I know a lot of people are looking at me with "those eyes" as they saw the title. But... truth is... HD movies playback MIGHT be possible on the Eee PC. And I'm not talking about some DivX HD movies, I'm talking about AVC h264 movies.

^= More on that later. And since it's using overlay, you won't see anything in the video frame... sadly.

Edit: Oh yeah, I'll get back to that FFX running at 30fps trick later, Phil... ;p For now, enjoy the ultra tiny HD-capable laptop. Seriously, "who woulda thunk", right???

Interesting. The only thing holding me back on the EEE PC is the screen resolution size. Anything less then 1680x1050 bugs me

HD on EeePC? In XP? May I honorably ask whether you have been abusing caffeine lately? ;p
In a Linux, should run faster, at least. Which softs would you be using ?

Naw... I've been abusing water.

Anyway, you can connect the Eee PC to an external VGA monitor, or HDTV.
I'm positive CoreAVC doesn't have a Linux version, and it's the only thing that will decode AVC contents at watchable speed. I've tried VLC, Moonlight, and mplayer with libavcodec. Even AVC with ffdshow. None of the available open-source solutions can achieve this... sadly. On the bright side, CoreAVC is only $8. Actually $20 if you want to get the most out of it. And anyway, you can try the codec out for 14 days. At this point, I say... it's worth it.

Edit: And did I say that the version of XP on my Eee PC has only 10 services running?

Again, seriously consider CoreAVC. 720p is absolutely smooth. 1080p is a bit too overkill indeed. It dies with any 1080p content I put in. Not as in... slide shows, but more like... too much delaying, and too much freezing. It's still somewhat watchable. 720p is still smooth.

this Welcome To Popcorn Hour looks very interesting though. vc1 playback @ 40mbps. 1080p

my old P4 struggled with 720p, and 1080p was retarded.

Really? Because the MGS4 clip I took from my PS3 was at 6MB/sec in total bitrate (4.5MB/sec for video and 1.5MB/sec for audio), and only CoreAVC (1.7.0) can properly play the clip. Any other application just returned slide shows. Audio codec was FFDShow AAC.

And I thought you'd have to re-encode most Blu-Ray contents to get 720p?

By the way, 1080p was really playing at 22.4fps versus the normal 24fps as shown up there.

Still lags to no end on the Eee PC. Just tried. Seems like CoreAVC really is the world's fastest AVC decoder... or at least it is from my own tests.

i decided to wait for the 900 Series,
20GB SSD for the Linux version and only 12GB for the one with Windows XP...
saves +8GB because of the XP licence, thats fair if you ask me :P

Yeah, the 900 looks and sounds to be a winner. Like how they improved the screen resolution. I may get one myself and give away my current Asus laptop...it's that tempting

Uhmm... the 900 is here, but please note that:
- It uses a bit more battery than the 70x series (8.9" screen versus 7" screen), plus the wireless signal is reportedly lower, probably because the antennas are no longer up in the screen bezel.
- Vanilla XP runs really slow on the Eee PC. An nLited version is recommended, and that still means you need a license.
- 900 is still the same machine with a bigger screen, repositioned antennas, and relocated speakers.

Better wait for the 901, or if you don't think you can shell out that much money, just get the 70x series. They are down to around $300 - 350 in price now if you hit up eBay.

My AthlonXP 2000 can run the Mgs4 trailers at 1080p with Coreavc. Without it it will show like 2 frames in the entire video. That codec is something.
