High temperature prpblem

Evry time i play a pc game for half an hour or more , my GPU temperature is going up to 83c! This happens only when i play pc games, when i run others programs, like word, excel, visual basic it dosent go any higher than 60 c. Is 83c dangerous for the gpu?

83 celsius?

sounds like a g80 core 8800 temp, usually the g92 are a bit cooler (though not too much)
GPUs can take up to 90 degrees so it's ok.
you may want to look into better case cooling

a new set of casefans and exhaust fan

you probably have bad case cooling.

also in the nVidia control panel, try raising the fan speed.
my card's default is 29% fan speed and ~60C when idle
when i raise the fan speed to 55%, my temps go down to ~46C when idle

The fan should move by itself tho when under load, to keep the temperature to a good temp.

Anyway, if the card was overheating, you'd probably get a warning message (doesn't happen with every card/software) or your pc would restart (would definitely happen).

Well, if I remember correctly, the dangerous temperatures are from 90 degrees celsius above. I've seen lots of video cards die due to failed fans, and they don't get any warning, just games freezing, make that a few times, and the card is permanently damaged.

In that case, a stopgap solution is to download RivaTuner and turn up the fan speed to maximum.

you have to install ntune i think..

type "ntune" in google and download it.

it then gives you more options in your nvidia control panel.

don't sweat it, dude, its the internal core temp, up till 2002 CPU's used socket based sensors to take temps, which are usually 30-40c less then the internal temp.

If your case has poor airflow, 83C sounds about right for your card. Try dusting out the GPU.

GPU cores can take quite a bit more heat then CPUs can.

Let your computer case open while having the same test and see how it goes. If it is considerably lower then your case cooling is not sufficient enough probably. Also try not to have the back of your case stuck to a wall but leave a space of at least 20 cm.

This reminds me of my X850XT with it's factory fan setting set at....5%...instant VPU reset after 5 minutes....I my case though I could use ATI tool to raise and control the fan speed.

Who on earth sets a performance card (it may be outdated, but it was at one time the 4th best card in the world) at 5%?????

(well apparently Fujitsu Siemens do...but that's beside the point)

Did you switch the card from automatic to manual before trying to raise the fan speed?

If you're unlucky, you may not be able to keep your card at a manual setting, I know mine would reset back to automatic every 2-3 minutes, or if I opened something eating GPU resources.

Baxter if your card is a single slot 8800GT, you need to up the fan speed, even on stock speeds or those temps get crazy high, if you can find one cheap enough think about an aftermarket cooler.

Rivatuner doesn't work on my 8800GT for some reason, however the latest ntune works perfectly.

I downloaded latest rivatuner version, riva tuner 2.8 I The default fan speed is 29% Why they set a perfomance card like 8800gt to 29%?! I will try and increase the fan speed . But i dont know is dangerous for the card to increase the fan speed? Or no? My 8800gt is Dual slot cooler.

Because it was overtly loud on 100%, its not dangerous to increase fan speed, its actually better for your card as its core is at lower temps.

Yep. Just REALLY loud. Even my Radeon 3850 is a bit loud on 100% fan speed. But I don't care. When I play games or PCSX2, it does 100% , when on Windows, it's on default.
