8800gtx or 9800gtx

Im planning on getting a new card in may. its going to be an 8800gtx or 9800gtx from EVGA. which card would be best for gaming at 1920x1200 resolutions? i know the 8800 has a better memory bandwidth and more memory, but the 9800gtx has higher speeds and runs cooler. they cost about the same. i also plan on stepping up to the 9900gtx in July (hopefully)

with that in mind, is there a chance of delay to the 9900gtx? i dont want my 3 month step up to run out before it comes out.

Well I would say 8800GTX....but that's only based on personal opinion...the 8800GTX impressed the socks of everyone whilst the 9800GTX sofar has not been that special from anything I have seen...possibly better than the 8800GTX...but barely...

If the 9900GTX comes out and it's just slightly faster than 9800GTX, you can quite guess how disappointed yourself will be. My advice? Just do what you think is right.

1.3 billion transistors,
a new architecture, very high clockspeed
a 512 bit memory interface

the 9900 is gonna rain a crapstorm upon the 9800gtx performance

i'll literally eat my hat if it doesn't

Mmmm, crapstorm

I'll still be going SLI 8800gtxs though, however since you don't have an 8800gtx or 9800gtx, this is not an option.

If you do get one of those two cards, just realize that the 9900 won't seem as impressive. I myself would prefer being patient, like tiki said, and then be even more impressed from an upgrade directly from you 8600gts to the 9900gtx.

I went from a 7800gt, to an 8800gtx, and at the time it was amazing to have FEAR and Oblivion go from "acceptable" frame rates, to "son of a biscuit, constant 60fps with everything maxed!"

yep, it's going to be that experience for me

Crysis going from 1440 at high to 1920 at very high + AA
suweet

idk if the 9900 could handle very high and high res with a lot of AF and AA though but it'll still look incredible

well i'll be honest, i went from a 6200 to a 8800 and i wasn't that impressed.

for ~$400 i expected more.
the 8800s can't game well at 1920x1080 which is my monitor's resolution.

Calm down... And to be honest with you, I still think that Crysis visuals are not impressive no matter how high a resolution or settings you set the game at.

So I was actually playing crysis the entire time i was down in hawaii?

Damn $1600 spent on just 1 videogame and there even was a glitch that i didn't get a gun and my suit energy never recharged. At least I was playing at full 60fps.

No, I don't. That's a myth, actually. The truth is, they just re-do the maps in the final version a little bit. Probably because they could not bear to do the entire game the way they made that demo map in the demonstrations. The jungle map with the "orgasmic" details is available on Crymod. I tried it, and I'd bet anything that a 9800GTX can run that thing at all High 1280 x 1024 no problem, and it'd look pretty good just like how it was in the demonstrations. There's no trick here. The settings aren't dumbed down. Our developers were just too lazy to map the entire island that way.

Too much bloom. Sheesh, so frikin not realistic, huh.

(the Ultra version of Crysis still looks pretty amazing tho, I just hope it doesn't CRAWL at 5-10 FPS for a loooong time because of being hella not optimized)

Remember this?

Crysis looks Orgasmic on editted ULTRA high settings(looks like '06 footage)

Khenaz jungle is available for download on Crymod. Just bump it up to Very High, set the resolution as high as you wish, and away you go. Note: If your card is anything short of a 9600GT or HD 3850, this is definitely not recommended.

I've seen two remakes of that map on Crymod (maybe not the one you're talking about tho) and I really don't find them to look that good. The quality of the gfx is exactly the same, it's just filled with trees and stuff, it doesn't really make the game look better, just more "complete"/filled.

I'm more interested in the modification in the .ini that increased in various ways the gfx quality instead of maps recreating the GDC06 video.

Edit : What's the name of the map on Crymod? Couldn't find it.
Never mind, got it. I saw it before but the screens shown in the details aren't the same, never recognized it. It doesn't look that different, but it would probably look better in-game.

Khenaz Jungle is the name. I think they demonstrated the same map in the demonstrations.
