Intel cuts prices for Quad Cores by 50%

Public service announcement

Quote:
Cnet story

Intel posted price cuts on Sunday that included reductions of 50 percent on select quad-core processors. The chipmaker also introduced new Celeron and Core 2 Duo processor models.

The price of the Core 2 Quad Q6700 (2.66GHz) fell 50 percent from $530 to $266, while the quad-core Xeon X3230 (2.66GHz) saw an identical cut: from $530 to $266.

Celeron price-cut highlights include the Celeron 430 (1.8GHz), reduced 23 percent from $44 to $34 and the dual-core Celeron E1200 (1.6GHz), falling 19 percent from $53 to $43.

The dual-core Xeon 3085 (3GHz) was reduced 29 percent from $266 to $188, and the Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 (3GHz), from $266 to $183, or 31 percent.

Pentium dual-core chips saw price drops too: The E2200 (2.2GHz) and E2180 (2GHz) were cut 12 percent and 14 percent to $74 and $64, respectively.

The chipmaker introduced the dual-core Celeron E1400 (2GHz) at a price of $53 and Celeron 570 (2.66GHz) at $134.

New Core 2 Duo chips were also introduced. The E8300 (6MB cache, 2.83GHz) and the E7200 (3MB cache, 2.53GHz) at $163 and and $133, respectively.

I'm pretty interested in how the E7200 will perform compared to the higher end Core 2 products. In theory it should OC quite nicely.

EDIT: Turns out it OCs pretty damn well. Didn't break 4ghz, but still performed very admirable for $133.

time differences ftw!

if they dropped the price of the 8 or 9 series then i would get a few,
shame it's only the older or cache/fsb handicapped chips lowered

I'm getting my hands on one of those chips (probably here next week). And by the way, don't trust the rumors. 4GHz is child's play for this chip, and it performs really identical to the E8500 at the same clock speed!

I work for myself. And no, my girlfriend is mine!

Hint: I am not having my final build. I am just trying out chips for other people who are interested in buying them. The E7200 could be my final build, though, as I wanted a budget computer to begin with.

Yeah. If I can prove E7200 can do pretty good or really good in PCSX2, I guess I can start selling some to people over here. I see they are retailing for $170 out there... and tsk... why pay that much?

I bet that if you sell that Q6600 now, you'll get way less than what you paid for it, right?

I wouldn't consider that overclock that great. 1.560v is way too much for a 45nm chip. It probably wouldn't last that long running 24/7 at that speed. Safe 24/7 voltages are more in the neighborhood of 1.35v.

it's 4.5 ghz ¬¬
what more could you want?

you do realise that e8400s struggle just as well to reach 4.5 ghz
and they cost a lot more

1.3 volts for 4ghz, that's an ok chip in my opinion

E8400 needed on an average of 1.48v. Some good chips with low VID can go as low as 4.4GHz with only 1.32v vCore.

The safe voltage seems to be up to 1.5v and a bit over that. Some people have been running their chips at that kind of voltage, and the chips are still running fine.
