X48 or nforce 790i?

when i end up building my new rig sometime this summer, it'll have a motherboard with one of those two chipsets. in terms of OC'ing and stability and what not, i think that the X48 and 790i boards are hardly apples and oranges. so the main deciding factor for me is if i will go ATI or stay NVIDIA in the future.

as far as i know, i will have to get the 790i (or any nforce board for that matter) if i want SLI. i also know that while the X48 chipset doesn't support SLI, it does support Crossfire for ATI. so my question is, if i ended up getting an X48 board, such as the Gigabyte GA-X48T, could i plop a single 8800gtx in there until the new R700 cores come out for ATI, then go crossfire with those if i wanted to?

The P45 should have been released by then, so IIWY I'd wait a bit and see how that performs before making a decision. Also, the 9900GX2/GTX along with maybe even the R700s would have come out.

IMO its still far too early to make a decision.

do you know if the geforce 9900 cards will also use the g92 core? that was one of the major criticisms of the 9800gtx/9800gx2, they were just more of the core clock and memory clock, and did not really improve anything.

i know that the next core iteration of ATI cards, the HD4000 series (R7xx core) will take advantage of new dx10.1 technologies that will be introduced in the future. there was another thread somewhere in these forums that outlined the specific changes of dx10.1, and that the geforce 9800 cards would not utilize them, while the HD4000 cards will.

Yes. AFAIK they're just going to be 55nm G92s.

The HD3s from amd already implement Dx10.1.

If you're considering going SLI if you need to, then I'd wait. SLI and xfire aren't as scalable as they could be, maybe future drivers will show promise. I heard the nforce 7 is just an improved nforce 6 chipset.

Even though when you get something new relating to a pc, there's always something new around the corner, we're not that far from the next "corner"

yeah, i'm extremely anxious to see AMDs new HD4k series cards

some of the specs of them are in another thread within this section of the forums, and i saw that some of the core clocks of the new HD cards would hitting over 1ghz, and with GDDR5 too.

i really hope AMD can put out a video card that will absolutely crush nvidia, because so far nothing they offer can compete price/performance.

the only reason i would go SLI is because i love my 8800gtx so much, and the price has dropped a couple hundred dollars from when i bought it.

sli and crossfire is a gigantic waste of money, for some games its even slower then normally, and its riddled with driver bugs.

Well with certain cards even I start to find it attractice, seeing how you can already have a Crossfire 3870, or an X2 for less than €300, which really isn't much for the performance. It would just require a bit more research so that you don't end up with your fav game not supporting it.

In any case I'm also still having a hard time deciding whether to pick up an 3870 now, or one of the new cards in summer. The 3870 offers a great bang/buck, but but the new stuff just looks great as well. Then again, prices will be higher again and I'd probably prefer a console anyway.
