the power of two 8800s?

no it doesn't, it's really an 8800gts re-named with a higher clock and less deliberately throttled drivers

you can get this one for £201 including delivery

If overclocked. You can't argue against 3DMark06! Even if it means... no difference in real gaming applications... whatsoever!

your getting the 9800GTX and the 9800GX2 mixed up.

Notice the subtle difference between the letters GTX and GX2. :P

The GX2 is what your thinking about and is virtually two 8800GT with higher frequency cores and lower mem speeds in SLI mode.

That's really a workstation, not meant for gaming and ect. In fact the review states this clearly.
If you want that for work or server purpose, meh, go for it.

If you want that as a desktop, waste of money. Get yourself a good quad-core and overclock it, you don't need more than a Quad-core atm anyway as far as desktop goes..

the price, heat dissipation, power consumption, speed and 1337 factor

oh and they're both a waste of money, wait a bit for the 9900gtx

9800GX2 is basically two 8800GT with higher frequency cores and lower mem speeds in SLI mode, all slapped together to make a single card

The 9800GTX is basically an 8800GT but with much higher memory and gpu core speeds.

Overall and in the majority of situations particularily in higher resolutions the 9800GX2 is faster.

Also chicks love guys who have 9800GX2... particularily the female nvidia marketing rep. You'll get twice as big a smile if you buy that one from her than a 9800GTX.

Or meanwhile, you can get a dual 9600GT rig for... $220 in total for the graphics cards. (hint: check Newegg)

Guess what? I'm a fan of mATX! Imagine a 4GHz quad-core computer with 8GB of RAM and a 9800GX2... in an mATX case! Man, that'd pop some eyes!

The 8800GT really should not have taken the G8 naming scheme, calling it the 9800GT would have made comparisons so much easier, theres too much confusion.

I suppose it would cause confusion to a new computer buyer, who doesn't have experience with graphics cards, i.e. me.

I read its almost identical to the 8800GTS, other then slightly better mem speeds (60mhz+) and it can overclock slightly better then the 88's due to the new board design.

Edit : This was meant to merge, missed the other post above, oh well.

I'm sure your right, but isn't the 8800GT almost identical to the 8800GTS, other somewhat faster core and slightly faster mem speeds?

You can spend as much as:
$5000 on a mobo and 2 CPU's
$3000 GPU
(That's a single GPU, but you never SLI workstation GPU; the performance goes backward in SLI )
But that will actually decrease your gaming speed
but it will like 3x your rendering speed :]
