AMD vs Intel (2008)

Let the polling begin. Seeing as how so much has changed in the CPU wars, it's time for a new poll on the never ending battle between AMD vs Intel. Vote and discuss away.

I would've voted for AMD, but I recently had a change of venue. This intel Q6600 is simply astounding. Clocks to 3.2 ghertz and still idles at 35 C and loads at 43 C. The poll might get a bit one sided by the looks of things.

Intel. No doubt about it. Early last year it *MIGHT* have made sense to go AMD, but this time round, its a no contest situation. Intel and their C2D are dominating, big time.

Not much point going AMD unless you are updating an old rig. Intel owns the budget and high-end right now.

Only way I would buy a Phenom over a Q6600 (well, too late, but still, IF ) is if was priced much lower, like at least $75 lower.

Intel looks like it's going to be king this year also.

And next year too with the deadly looking Nehalem.

I'm glad this poll is public now so we can see whos voting for what...

Even in 07 last years poll had AMD dominating, even though as early as jan 07 the core2duo and quad had been out since summer 2006 and the conroes were handedly beating the amd x2's especially in overclocks...
I could only see amd crushing intel in a 2006 poll of p4/p4D vs x2/athlon XP

Now we can see who the fan boys for both amd and intel are.

Yeah, it's a bad time for AMD, for enthusiasts anyway..... BETRAYERS!!!!

Anyway, honestly I'd take any new technology or design with a grain of salt, everyone is expecting Nehalem to cream AMD even more, but wouldn't it be possible the problems AMD having right now will also affect Intel when they go IMC? Because it seems AMD's problems can't be easily alleviated due to the IMC itself.....

GenuineIntel. Though I find it somewhat ironic I have an ATi (AKA AMD) graphics card...

My MacBook (Intel C2D) and desktop (AMD AX2) are similarly specced and the Mac creams my desktop in almost everything.

Question

I used to be a diehard AMD fan, partly because because AMD used to offer the most bang for the buck and I like to root for the underdog.

I'm planning on building a high-end gaming system and understand Intel trumps AMD on dual-core, but what about quad-core? Is Intel's quad better than AMDs? On another forum someone said AMD's quad is better right now.

And are AMD's problems carrying over to their ATI graphics cards, or are nVidia and ATI still running neck and neck? Inquiring minds want to know.

AMDs Phenom is getting it's ass kicked by Intels first quad line, the Kentsfield. Just do a little reading on the latest reviews and such karmictaragem...it's bloody obvious and has been for almost the past year who the leaders are *cough*IntelNvidia*cough*.

Budget as well? Does this also go for mainstream consumers who don't overclock? I know that all those Pentium Dual Cores (e2xxx) aren't faster than the old X2 from AMD at stock speeds, but has Intel went as low with the prices to push AMD out of the market there as well?

Anyway, perhaps for the average person AMD would be a good choice, for anyone who is into tweaking his own system Intel is king.

Unfortunately, yes. E2180 for $70 has been spotted in Vietnam, and performance of that chip versus the Athlon64 X2 4400+ is... about on par, but the E2180 obviously has a lot of potential.

It's a matter of the even lower-end markets now, and Celeron 4xx series are beating the Athlon64 LE-16xx series. I guess it all boils down to Celeron E1xxx and Athlon64 X2 "budget edition" now.

Edit: And maybe the price drops on older Intel processors are due to the appearance of these budget 45nm processors, the E7xxx series. They are priced almost at the E6300 level (on par with E4500, E4700 processors) and run at clocks that are much more insane. I'd bet anything that those will be very widely used for PS2 emulation once the dusts have settled in July... or maybe August.

If you pay your energy bill Intel, if you're looking to go extreme it's a close competition actually but I'd go AMD. NVIDIA and I don't really get along so it's aTi for me, but I don't think there's too much difference between the two; Intel does lose some speed ( if buying commercially ) to AMD but AMD isn't as "stable" and costs more to run.

My opinion amd is good enough as well as price are equal to speed, especially in low segment compare to intel. Overclock to 3.1 or 3.2 is easy

Vote for the Underdog!

I like AMD because they're usually cheap and very stable.

Oh and Intel gets through they're hardships the easy way, throwing money at it.

AMD is much more impressive, they fight Intel with (currently) a measly 3 billion dollar market cap (and that's for CPU AND GPU)

Oh, and remember what happens if AMD dies, all of those (already expensive) Intel CPUs will start having stratospheric prices!
