What if some poor sap decides to go all out and purchase a "940" expecting it to be as fast as the one they just heard about, then they get confused and buy a Phenom 940????

That would be pretty ****ing SAD!!!!

yeah, he'd still be lucky to have it, but it's like comparing apples and oranges....

AMD is more like what i would call budget technology there technology is equal to intels but it dosent give as much horse power as intel does

For me the naming scheme is not a problem. As only there will be only fools that would get confused by it. Either by name (Who the heck only buys by "name"? Oh yeah.....) or by the Gigahurtz. >_>

As for performance, the Phenom 2 is a match to the Q9000 series by Intel. (Give or take some overclocking headroom.) Most practical people are ignoring the slight performance advantage of the Core i7 primary due to the prices of the overall needed hardware to have a complete i7 system.

Even some people are suggesting that people should hold off their 45nm Core2Duos because sadly Core i7 isn't that much of a gamers system, but for servers though.... It's another story.

Edit : Intel CANNOT sue AMD because numbers cannot be copyrighted. EVEN you see something like AMD Athlon i7 processor, Intel can't do anything. I think.

The Phenom IIs are really impressive. Especially price wise.

The majority of AM2 owners can just upgrade from their AMD 64 or X2 CPUs to the Phenom II without having to replace their motherboard. So there's even more money saved.

You can tell Intel is feeling a bit threatened by them now...throwing them a completely, out of the blue, nonsense lawsuit

Yeah, but my point was that it matches the\ naming scheme of the i7 which could lead some poor buyers into one Hell of a disappointment...

Had you bought the best possible hardware 5 years ago you would have bought an AMD Ahtlon64 or an AMD X2, they OBLITERATED everything Intel had.

AMD were a full 2 YEARS ahead of Intel with multi-core technology (as well as 64bit processors which are the norm these days).

Then they bought ATi and became quiet and fell behind and are only now recovering.

AMD IS NOT CATCHING ON, ITS COMING BACK.

Intel was worth less than AMD currently is.

I don't think it's a "hell" of a disappointment as at max it would be something only like 5 to 10% performance difference. And there are also other hardware waiting to get bottlenecked.
