Radeon HD 4000 series specifications surfaces

Quote:
The ATI Radeon HD 4000 series is slated for late Q2. Information about the high-end RV770 has been leaking onto the web, from here and there, but the exact specifications has remained in the shadows. German hardware site Hartware.net has gotten their hands on what seems to be pretty authentic information. As far as we can tell, it looks believable and matches the rumors going around. We're still far away from the launch and the figures are subject to change. We also have some information on our own to share with you.

Not every fresh batch is a completely new generation, the HD3870/50 for instance are further developed 2900XTs. It's really just strategic brand naming in several cases. ATi/AMD announced some time ago that they were to release

- A new High end GPU once per 6 months
- A new Mid Range GPU once per 6 months
- A new budget GPU once a year

So this pretty much fits in. I'm not complaining though, it will force nVidia to keep up as well. We'd all be screwed if ATi wouldn't be able to keep up. I'd love to see them put another 9600/X1950Pro/HD3780 on the market. After all, being king of the hill is nice and prestigious (8800Ultra), but that's not where the money is made. Give some great bang for buck, and your cards will sell like hotcakes, with the 3870 and 8800GT as proof. And in case of the 3870/50 there's a chance your relative profits will be higher as well when compared to the upper tier, most expensive cards.

but its always good o have a little something extra for the paying custumer. look at the x1950xtx. it was a monster for its day, constantly hitting higher benchmarks then nVidia's 7900. since the take over, its been all about mid-range cards. it would be nice to see them develop a product that wouldmake nVidia NVous for once

By those standards though, this means the HD4000 series should be competitive with the GeForce 9000 series, but what about the other 3000 series? No Radeon 3950? Hmm... It seems the 3000 series would be given an early obsolesence period....

try and sell your 2900xt and buy a newer card with the money,
there are some people who still want the 2900

and it will save you money, the 2900s are power whores
a 3870x2 would be around the same rating of power use

There are still people who would want the 2900XT, although on greatly reduced prices..... =/

Anyway, I think the 3870x2 consumes the most power among video cards, followed by 2900XT and then 8800 Ultra, but then all of them consumes so much power it's nearly irrelevent to compare them that way.

Well for a dual core chip it's pretty energy efficient I think. Try putting in two 2900XTs and two 8800Ultras just to put it in perspective

If there's one thing I'm glad for it's that GPU companies finally start to take power usage seriously. Heck, this might mean that I have quite some life left in my 580W PSU, provided it doesn't smoke. Seeing the current trend, I wouldn't be surprised if an A-brand 500W PSU would be enough to power about any single card system.

Is the 8800gt a mid-range or a high-end card? How much time do you think it will be able to play all games with full settings? Do i need to buy a better card in a year for now or it will take longer before games will need more powerful cards?

Actually there is one game that needs a more powerfull card than a 8800 Ultra to use highest settings, i don't need to name it, do i?, but you will be fine with a 8800 for now.

HEHE!! You are right there is one VERY heavy game that needs a more poweful card than the 8800ultra to run at ultra high settings 1280x1024! And this game is Crysis!!! But even with my 8800gt i got near playble speeds in ultra high settings (20-35 fps with the ultra high tweak for xp). But the 8800 ultra is not much more powerful than a 8800 gt, 2 8800gt in Sli mode can beat 1 8800ulta for sure

Weird, a whole lot of people are saying ATI's drivers bites or sucks or whatever, but I've owned 3 ATI cards in my computing life and I didn't have any problems with them..... >.<

It would sound like when you buy an ATI product you don't expect the video cards to work or something....
