Unhappy ePSXe.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close

Greetings. As the topic says, I need a little help. I believe I have Isolated where the problem is and want to know if anyone knows of any solutions, and I would be eternally grateful if anyone can help me.

Whenever ePSXe tries to initialize OpenGL to run a game, I get the error listed in the topic of this thread. I have tried many GPUs and all have the exact same problem. Granted, the Software plugin does run games just fine, but I wanted to look for a solution that allowed me to run OpenGL for the games.

There's a possibility that it might be linked to my GFX Card's latest drivers or the SP level of my windows version. The reason I say this is because the GPU plugin I use worked perfectly when I first upgraded to Windows XP-SP1. I also had a set of gfx drivers that were loaded from the CD that came with the Video Card I have. At some point inbetween then and now, upgrading to Service Pack 2 for Win-XP Professional and Upgrading to the latest available GFX drivers for my Video Card, I somehow lost ePSXe's ability to run games out of OpenGL.

Below are the plugins lists:

GPU: Pete's OpenGL2 Driver 2.8
SPU: P.E. Op.S. DSound Audio Driver 1.9
CDROM: P.E. Op.S. CDR Driver 1.4

Are you using the latest drivers for your card? Also, try using different plugins for sound and CD, and delete all the plugins in your plugins folder that you aren't using, those might be making the emulator crash.

Kane,

Yes, I have given the 1.x (in this case, the 1.78 plugin) a try.

I get the feeling that it might be the Graphics card drivers.. It's just so strange that before I did all those upgrades it ran normally... Not that I am doing anything wrong, mind you... You'd think that upgrading your GFX card drivers would be a good thing...

Hushy,

I'm afraid I have tried all of those and still same exact problem...

There is one plugin that DOES work and it is with using Direct3D: It's Called [Next3D] 1.5, but this one has a lot of issues with rendering things. Parts of the screen are either missing or pure white & other miscellaneous oddities....

Any news of a Pete D3D 2.8? (big hope!)

This is sort of dodging the ePSXe problem, but have you tried another emulator like PSXeven, SSSPSX, pSX, or PCSX?

I haven't given those other emulators a test-drive yet but I suppose I could give it a shot.... I also got this from Pete's Forums:

Quote:
First, make sure that you installed drivers AFTER service pack 2. Second, some ATI driver versions are known to have problems with OpenGL. Try newer version if it is available. If not try to downgrade driver to previous version (which worked fine for you). Also report this issue to ATI.

P.S. This happened before actually. There were drivers in which OpenGL didn't work at all. ATI fixed it and were making excuses for quite a time. If history repeats itself then this another troubling sign of ATI going to Vista. Personally I prefer NVIDIA cards.
Looks like I'll be downgrading my driver version tonight to see if this actually works.

Thanks very much for your input & suggestions. I'll report back any results just incase anyone else has this type of problem in the future.

=====================================

Ok,

Looks Like I have won temporary victory. I downgraded to the next-newest set of drivers and it seems to work. Catalyst 7.4 Control center & Display Driver, to be exact.

I submitted a feedback ticket regarding the issue to ATI. Hopefully, although doubtfull, they will work on it.

Thanks again for your help.

Hello,
I have exact the same problem!
(You can see my specs in my signature).
It writes:
Quote:
AppName: epsxe.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 00001010
I think my display driver is the problem, too.
If I use D3D renderer 1.11, it runs without any problems.

But I'm not going to downgrade it.
I will wait until the next release has been released.

That's good that the D3D seems to work, although I put valuable programs above my display driver. I dont know who will be the first to compensate: Pete's OGL GPU or ATI, but needless to say I would prefer to have the latest GPU plugin rather than the latest graphics drivers, as I dont think Half-Life 2 will run any smoother with 7.6 than with 7.4.

another example: there is a slight time lag in the S-video of ATI's latest capture cards/tv tuners. I decided to finally go with an LCD with a TV/S-video/component input but also has a computer LCD input (analog digital) as I can't play my playstation 2 through my computer anymore due to this timelag. ATI is abandoning the All-In-Wonder line of products and I need a graphics processor that is cutting edge, yet a s-video input that didn't have a time lag. The earlier versions were perfect. But it is nearly impossible to get a hold of the X1900 all in wonder cards... So I am faced with a very dissapointing crossroads.
