Question Trying to decide between, ePSXe 1.6 and 1.5.2

Hello,

I am new to the psx emulator world, but ePSXe comes highly reccommended. I have read all the supporting documents that I have been able to find, and I recall reading a section that stated that 1.5.2 was over 95% compatible. The author was explaining how a number of games that were working in 1.52 were no longer working in 1.6 or that fixes in place for 1.52 were not useable in 1.6.

As I am a first time user for this program, would I be better off using the 'old' version of 1.5.2 or going with the most current release ?

Has anyone had experiences that might lend them to a well-phrased and informed opinion ? (please avoid the " use 152 cuz its much betterer!!! " )

Thank you,
Ryan

PS : I will check back at this thread in about 30 minutes, I'm off to find a list of changes in 1.6 vs 1.5.2.

Most games that had hiccups in 1.60 have workarounds now. So 1.60 would be the way to go, unless you Final Fantasy 7/8/9 or Chrono Cross, wich should run better on 1.52

1.5.2

1.6.0 was riddled with bugs. There was meant to be a bug fix released shortly afterwards before the developers just disappeared altogether.

Keep both version in handy, IF you still have problems, you can try other emulators such as Psxeven, pSX or SSSPSX.
Also I think Gran Turismo 2 works better under 1.6.0, but Hard core Rikki pretty much summed it up for you compatibility wise.

Yeah, I gotta agree here. Keep both 1.5.2 and 1.6.0 around. You can trade memory card AND save states between them, so there is no harm having both of them. I also keep a non ePSXe emulator (PSXeven 0.17) for those "tough times" when ePSXe just can't handle a particular game. You can trade memory cards between emulators (which makes it IMPORTANT to not rely on just save states) although with some emulators you may need a converter. ePSXe to PSXeven (and vice-versa) requires no converting for the memory card, so that makes it all the more handy.

So, to sum up: For maximum compatibility (I will likely play the mainstream games only, I just get tired of having my PS1, PS2, SNES all sitting in front of the TV so I'm moving to EMU for the old stuff). I ought to install both 1.5.2 and 1.6.0 and use the same BIOS in each? Just run 1.6.0 until I have a problem and then try 1.5.2 -> unless I want to play FF or CC ?

I have a USB logitech gamepad, will that work easily ? (PS2 style controller)

Thank you all for the quick and accurate replies and for supporting a program like this one.

Yeah, just copy all the stuff you put in one (BIOS, plugins, memcard, etc.) and put it in the other. 1.5.2 and 1.6.0 are fully compatible with each other, so anything you get for one, you can get for the other, you just have to copy the stuff from one version of epsxe to another.

ePSXe has no problems with controllers. I used to use a Welcom Gamepad (based on the Dualshock 2 design) until the actual controller fried. Even so, it worked wonderfully (when the controller worked). I use an adaptor now so I use an official PSX Turbo controller for most of my emulation. Again, there are no problems with this either. You should be fine, just make sure you have the controller plugged in and the drivers installed before you turn on ePSXe, so that way the input will go in. I have a bad habit of plugging the controller in when I am at the controller input screen and get frustrated when it doesn't work.

yeah, I have the controller working now with my copy of zsnes, it was really weird at first, using a computer to play FF6 and all my other snes games. I got over it, but I was really bad for using save states and the 'super speed' button for awhile. Makes repetitive leveling a little broken, lol. Takes some discipline to use only 'game saves' etc...

I can't wait to get some of my ps1 games running with AA x 16, arf, no more pixels!!
