CDROM detection issues - USB compatibility?

So I'm trying to run the Metal Gear Solid PS1 disc but it's not working.

I tried a couple different plug-ins, and I've come to conclude it's because my DVD burner drive is connected by USB. It works absolutely fine, but when using ePSXe and the included or Pete's plug-in, it simply will not detect the drive, at all.

Is there a plug-in out there that can recognize USB connected drives? Is there a different emulator I should use? All I really want to do is record a part of the game to make into a ringtone for my phone so I don't care about gameplay or graphics or anything, just decent sound quality. But even that I can enhance with the tools I have, so ANYthing will work. Specifically, I'm looking for the codec call sound, but I still want to play the game. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much!

EDIT: Alright I just discovered something. The way I was closing ePSXe on another computer made me realize the possible problem I was having on this one (with the USB DVD drive) and that is, when using ALT+F4 or even pushing ESC to go to the ePSXe menu or whatever, it still kept the process open (don't have speakers on my other comp so I wouldn't know when it's still open like that) but after closing them (because on my other computer where ePSXe works just fine it was reproducing the same exact problem - not detecting the disc drive ((the same brand just one step lower model of DVD burner))) it worked just fine, but I missed recording the sound and then configuring stuff I screwed up the video and audio so I tried it again over on this computer and it won't recognize the drive again, but it did ONCE. The drive light came on, it moved, but when changing resolution it seemed, was when it got stuck (no sound came out) and all I could see was my browser, which was the other open and selected window when I opened ePSXe. Now I can't get it to do that again now that I've configured ePSXe video.

Yeah ePSXe doesn't support external drivers.
You can still however play the game, just make an ISO of it.

Thanks for the idea! I was thinking about it, I have the means necessary in order to make an ISO..I just didn't want to have to bother with it. Well, thanks a bunch!

Out of curiosity, what do you mean though? It doesn't support drivers for external devices?

It can't detect from external drives because it doesn't have support for that type of drive interface.
