P.E.Op.S. Soft Driver can't change resolution?

Hi! After having alot of trouble with both FF7 and 9, I thought i'd try P.E.Op.S. Soft Driver 1.17 instead. And no lag at all! Anyways, I can't change the resolution. Is it supposed to be like that? Why are there options for changing resolution if it can't be changed?
Meaning, I get fullscreen and everything, but the characters are still in native psx resolution.

Top part of the panel where? In the Soft Driver configurations? If that's what you mean, then yeah, that's what I'm saying. It doesn't do anything. I set the resolution to whatever and it's still native psx resolution.

Oh yeah, well, that's because it's supposed to mimic real PSX graphics closely. If you want to get rid of these restrictions, switch to a D3D/OGL plugin, or even better OGL2. If your graphic card is good enough of course...

Ahh! D3D/OGL OLG2 doesn't work right for me. It doesn't run as smooth as the soft driver at all. And I've done ALOT of tweaking and testing. With OGL, I get slowdowns and sound lag in the transitions when switching screens, which get very annoying. And the Soft driver seemed to run much smoother and now I can't even change resolution!

Your problem is simple, don't take it personally but... your PC sucks. It's time for an upgrade

PS: you can still post your specs, just in case I may be wrong (although I really doubt it)

Processor: Intel Core Duo T2300E / 1.83 GHz ( Dual-Core )
Cache-memory: 2 MB - L2 Cache
RAM: 1024 MB DDR2
Harddrive: 70 GB - Serial ATA-150 - 5400 opm
Graphics controller: Intel GMA 950

Now, this is the computer I'm at right now. This one is slightly better than the other one, but the problems are the same with the slowdowns. I don't think it's got anything to do with hardware. Just seems like these graphic chips or something doesn't like these plugins or something.

It's quite ok, except for graphics, integrated always suck, especially Intel's...
buy a real graphic card. Also, the FF battle swirls often tend to be a bit slow, even on good computers (lots more if the plugin isn't correctly configured). Those swirls aren't important, so either you deal with it, or you just find good settings that may make them look bad but faster.
OGL2 does everything ok IMO, but it requires a decent card

Ah ok, these are both laptops btw. But this game runs alot of other much newer games much better than this emulation though. I had no problems like these when using my Radeon 9700 at my last computer. But the other laptop has a GeForce Go 6150. Is that really bad too?

Edit: Isn't it possible since the Soft Driver runs great, to just set up the resolution a bit more? Isn't this open source or something? I know nothing about coding, but would that be extremely hard to do? Just setting up the resolution slightly?

What are the settings you are using for pete's ogl 1.76? You should be able to get a steady 60 frames with that laptop. I get higher fps with ogl 1.76 then P.E.Op.S. Soft Driver 1.17. That is most likely my cpu holding me back on the soft driver though.

I've tried everything I can with the olg1.76 driver and it seems impossible to avoid sound and a slight framerate drop when switching screens.

Ok...With Pete's OGL1.Lower the resolution to 640*480.Disable scanlines (Personally I don't see the necessity with the resolution I gave you). Put framebuffer textures to Emulated VRam and framebuffer access to 4. You won't be able to see the battle swirls but the speed will be increased.

Naa, I still get lag when using those settings. It's a little better though. But not good enough. The only good thing about the Ogl1 driver on this computer is the fact that I can get a better resolution. But the backgrounds look worse, lag when switching screens and no battle swirl. Seems to me like the Soft driver is still the best way to go. You don't know any way to increase the resolution with the soft driver then? Or would that mean rewriting the code?
