problem with my external dvd/cd rom help pls

newbie question: why does my games doesn't work in epsxe when im using my external dvd/cdrom. It just open a blank screen. But I've tried it in my other cdrom it works fine. help plss.
I've pointed epsxe in the right cd drive but it just won't work.

another question:

is there any way to change the shortcut keys of the save states(F1) and load states(f3) to another shortcut key?

external drives dont work with ePSXe. something about ATAPI or whatever.

and as far as i know, no, you cant change those buttons.
