Slight issue with Pete's OpenGL2 and ATi X1800 XL...

Hey all.

Well, I recently got an ATi Radeon X1800 XL, and one of the first things i've tried is ePSXe. Now, to be particular, I want to use the highest internal X and Y resolution (Being: X="Very High - Needs Modern Card, otherwise crashes are possible" and Y= "Ultra high - A 256MB card is recommended, VERY slow FB effects")

Now, previously, I was using an X800 (which does not support 4X x 4X texture resolution). Now, this (from what I know) is what these settings enable...and according to my information, the X1000 series supports this texture res.

But, when I set it, instead of having it display properly, i just see a light grey background...and that's it. At least with the X800, it indicated that the card doesn't support these settings, but now....I hear the BIOS booting, I hear the game loading and the sound of intro movies playing, but I just see a light grey background.

Now, from my tests, the main culprit for this is the internal X resolution setting....on very high, it displays the light grey background...on any other setting, it's fine. So, shouldn't this work? I am really looking forward to getting this working, and I hope that it is possible.

Cheers for reading, and the potential feedback.

Wow...that was fast.

Unfortunately, it is the same....it's the fact that the X resolution is set to very high....the Y resolution on Ultra High works.

I wonder what this could be...

Hmmm.
Maybe Pete's the key to the answer.

Well, I would try contact him but I don't know if I will be successful (especially with the amount of mail that he receives).

I hope that someone (and/or I) can firgure out this issue or, hopefully, Pete will come across this thread and give in his input.

But, what would you recommend I do? I am willing to try anything.

Note: His website/s do not work.

Thank you very much for the links. Although, the links I was refering to are the same ones...but, my ISP is renowned for it's continual screw-ups, so I'll give it another go....

...alright, the message board works....phew!

I'll ask away...cheers, hushypushy.

Update: Well, according to my research, there is a problem, which has not been fixed just yet....

Alright, I managed to get it working!

I uninstalled the drivers (Cat 6.4), and then used Driver Cleaner Pro (v1.5) to remove EVERYTHING related to ATi, and installed the Cat 6.5 drivers (including the Oblivion Driver Patch). That seemed to get it working.

So, now I can set both internal X and Y resolutions to setting 2. I can also set the internal Y res. to setting 3, but it runs quite bad.

The only issue left is that the moment I set the internal X res to setting 2, there is a black bar on the left side of the screen. It appears like the aspect ratio is squeezed, but in FF9, for example, I can see the bar appearing and disappearing (flickering) showing content of the fullscreen, and its as if this black bar is covering a segment of the screen....does this make any sense?

I mentioned FF9 cause that was the game that I just happened to test with last. I also tried Spyro and FF7...they follow the same pattern.

But, there is something you mentioned that really interests me..cause I didn't even think to try.

I am testing it on SSSPSX right now. Remember, the last issue I am encountering is not reserved solely to the FF series; it affects all the games I play.

But, dude...you are great. Thank you so much for the assistance. I hope this helps others too, encountering similar issues.

yeah, emulation is all about experimenting and trying out new things. and the best part is, you can take your findings, come back to the forum, and then share your help with other people! for example, i dont have a 1xxx card, so i dunno waht to say to those who do have problems. if people like you help out, that just makes the community grow

Your words are true, hushypushy...so, I have taken some screens to try help illustrate the black border I was refering to.

There are three pics. Just download them, and play them one after the other consecutively; snap1, snap2 and snap3. So, if you use the standard Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, you can see exactly what I am talking about. Even though it is looping the same images over and over, it still gives an insight to what the games are actually doing...and this happens the moment the internal X res is on 2.
