okay once, then i have to restart comp

i'm messing with the settings to get the game working properly(FF8), i play it, and then close it to adjust settings, and i start it up again, and it just sits there at a black screen and doesn't start, i have to re-set my computer before it will start the game again...what can i do to avoid this?
