Emulator too fast?

ePSXe works fine for me, but my friend recently got it. He popped in a CD and loaded it up, but the emulator goes way too fast... the only solution I could think of was limiting the FPS to a lower number, but that didn't fix it. What else could we try?

in the Video Plugin configuration enable Frame Limit. set it to Auto or manually to 60FPS (for NTSC) 50FPS (for PAL)

I appreciate your attempt to help, but if you had read my post, you would have read that I said "the only solution I could think of was limiting the FPS to a lower number, but that didn't fix it."

Anyway, the problem somehow fixed itself when he used a different video plugin...odd way to fix it, but thanks anyway.

What the hell plugin were you using? Any of the current popular plugins have a fully functional framelock.

I don't know what plugin he was using... I never had any problems (except I didn't have an updated audio plugin for ASYNC in Valkyrie Profile)

Speed was never an issue here.

well did you ever consider that maybe the frame limiter was never turned on?

Hey Kane, didn't the latest release of epsxe have a problem with speeds, even if you had it set to 60 FPS didn't it still run at close to 200 FPS. I haven't messed with epsxe in a while, so I don't really recall but wasn't a bug that cabe, announced in the emulator?

The only speed releated problem I recall with ePSXe 1.6.0 was that Chrono Cross had timining issues, which were fixed by the command line extension '-noauto'. If there are others, I'm unaware of them. I haven't been using emus as much recently owing to my hardware setup changing every 10-20 minutes :P

Heh, I never have anytime for anything, I have all these games I want to play and no time to play them, there needs to be more hours in a day. I knew about the Chrono Cross one. As you stated, I dunno if there are any other speed/timing issues either. I use 1.5.2 cause it works the best for me.

Nah, just double checked it. 60 FPS = 60 FPS.

Similarly I use 1.5.0 more than 1.6.0 coz games like Dino crisis series and resident evil series run better on that version.

Actually there are two situations were the auto fps limit does not work (both of which are related).

1. If the emu's country setting is set to 'pal' but you are running an 'ntsc' game, or vice versa. The emu then incorrectly tells the gpu what speed is the default.
2. If the emu's country setting is set to 'auto' but the game you are running has had an ntsc/pal conversion patch applied to it. AFAIK the emu determines the correct region from the disks psxid string, which is not altered by patching the game. Hence the game is detected as it's original region, not the patched one. This is in turn then incorrectly passed to the gpu as before.

I have 1.6.0 and I have never had speed problems, except with the aforementioned Chrono Cross, which is fine, because it works with 1.5.2 (as others have pointed out) so when I go to play that, I'll be fine.

Otherwise, yes, I checked that the frame limiter *was* enabled....it was strange, but since all is fine now, there are no complaints.

Oh, to save myself a topic, does anyone know is there are any known problems with Vagrant Story? My friend is letting me borrow it after I beat Valkyrie Profile, and I'm just wondering...?
