Online Gaming Problems

I am the administrator of an online league for the game Winning Eleven 2002. I have a few technical questions about ePSXe, which I would be grateful if anyone around here might be able to answer.

In this game, it is paramount to have a good ping to the server. If not, the game experiences lag. Sometimes however, some players appear to have an advantage over their opponent in terms of response times regardless of ping. They are first to win the ball etc...

Sometimes, it takes me two or three presses before my player responds to kick the ball. Other days, there appears to be less latency between my joypad and the server, causing "quicker responses".

This difference is creating unrest in my league and results are being blamed on this "advantage".

So, my questions - could this advantage be caused by a better USB connection, more CPU memory, quicker net connection etc etc?

Also, is it possible to connect two games without a server from the Kaillera list?

Sorry if this is not too clear.

hi!

First of all, congrats for your page, I think that's a nice project.

If many people use the internet, the ping is normally bad.
That means if you play in the week, at night, your ping is normally better, than at the sunday afternoon.
You can also have a good ping with one ISP, and a bad ping, at the same time with another.
The connection speed is also important ... you will normally have a better ping with a Cable connection, than with a 56K-Modem. (but that also depends on your internet-provider).

In germany they sell for ADSL-connections, a feature called "Fast-Path", this feature will give you a optimal ping, and was "designed" for online-gaming and stuff like that.

If the game runs "offline" in full speed, your CPU/memory and this stuff should not be the problem.

Make sure you set the "Connection Speed"-setting in the kaillera window correctly. This is important for a decent gameplay.

You can run a Kaillera-server locally, which isn't in the public kaillera-server-list. (You can get the server-software from http://www.kaillera.com ).
The server could run on the machine of the player, who has a bad ping ... maybe this improve the speed.

hi thanks for your reply. It's not quite the response I was looking for. We are dealing not really with a ping issue here. I am aware that different connection speeds produce different pings.

The question was asking "what else can affect gameplay differences?", such as the player response issue I mentioned.

Can you also clear up what you meant by
"Make sure you set the "Connection Speed"-setting in the kaillera window correctly. This is important for a decent gameplay."

Is this where you indicate your own ping (good, LAN etc)?

hi!

A bad ping is the reason for lags.

The "connection type"-setting in kaillera try to prevent this issue.
If you set a lower value (Bad (10 keyframes/s) for example) the server will cache the data. This caching and a bad ping could be the reason for your "response issue". On the other side, if you set it to LAN (60 keyframes/s), it could slowdown your game or cause a out of sync.
The server can even remove keystrokes, if there are too much, and the clients can't handle them that fast (because of lags).

So, the internet connection is the main-reason for all problems.

Re: Online Gaming Problems

if the computers have different plugins, then that can also cause prolems. make sure that every computer uses the same plugins, as that helps it run better. try going here for a checklist on how to make the game run better.
