Help Please, AMD K6-2 550 MHz slow, 20 fps

Hi all,
Been amazed how well ePSXe runs on my
Celeron 550 MHz, Soyo 6Ba+III, V550 Viper2 256 Megs Ram double speed. Set fps limit to 60 fps. WIN98SE

but I've been trying the same using a
Aptiva (Acer MB) 2153 upgraded to AMD-K6-2 550 MHz,
100 MHz Bus, Radeon 7200 Video, 256 Megs RAM, WIN98SE
and the best I can get is around 20 fps, kinda slow,
and and echoing sound.

Closed all unnecessy Apps. in Taskmanager and MSCONFIG.

In the menus fps is 60, but during the game its around 20
with poor sound. Tried turing the sound off, but no difference.

Is there a patch to speed up ePSXe, or AMD non MMX systems ?

Been trying two games so far Gran Tourismo and FIFA 2001,
they both work well on my Celeron System ?

Had to turn off some filtering to get Gran Tourismo
to be other than black on the Movie Screens,
but if I Select/Start through the Black screens,
I eventually get to the Game menu's, and game works
but slow.

Here's the AMDs ePSXe current config.

Strange.. 20fps? sound more like P233 MMX speed.

Use peops directsound and configure it like this:

The K6 series all have MMX. Since you have a radeon, you should use Pete's D3D driver, not OpenGL.

Hi ThanKs for the quick reply.
Now I know there is Hope for the AMD K6-2 550 100x5.5
I have new hope and a New Target.

By the way I tried a GeForce 4 MX420 but the IBM Craptiva bios
would not support it (Newest avaialble is Nov 1999), so I settled for the radeon 7200, the only newer board that I could get to work.( better than the onboard 2Megs Rush Video)

The ePSXe package didn't include that sound driver..
but I'll find it.. and try it on both systems.

Hey could you please try www.pcpitstop.com
free test.

It alerts me that my ram is only working at half speed.
All my BIOS cache is turned on..
says I should ne gettinng 66M and I'm only getting 30M.

OH by the way I do have the latest DirectX8.0a

Tried all the different formats including D3D, and seems opengl
has the best resolution. D3D had the same fps around 20...
and even with sound on null, but I'll try again with your suggested settings...

ThanX,

Let me know what your Test results are...

I'm also going to try Performance Test V4 and save the performance result link.. tried it before and the RAM and MMX
math was 1/2 of another AMD K6 500 system.

ok, i ran the test and this was the result for memory:

Speed Rating 769 MB/s (103% of 16735 similar), with my overall test score at 186.

Damn, what a difference. It may be that Craptiva mobo. Also, i run my K6-2 550 @ 5.0x110, which makes a significant difference on speed due to the K6-2's external L2 cache running at the speed of the FSB. I'll try that performance test V4 and tell you my results on that. Do you have MSN messenger? It would be easier for me to help with that.

Hate to say it, but it's becasue you have a k6 series cpu, those had horrible fpu's and were bad for gameing, your cpu slows you down and there's little that can be done with it

I know about its FPU, but i get 60 in all games with epsxe, hell, i can run GTA III acceptably. Don't post if you don't know what you're saying. Oh, Pete's plugins use 3dnow if your video card's drivers are optimized for it, therefore, in epsxe, my cpu is whooping the crap out of a P II at the same MHz.

Infact, k6 doesn't have the worst FPU, the Cyrix series does. My 550 whips a C3 1ghz.

I found it! You're using ATI garbage, aren't you? JK.

But really, I had a K6-2 500 CPU chip and I found that the speed wasn't as amazing as an Intel equivalent. I think this may be because (just a guess) that the K6-2s had a lousy architecture. But I can't think of any other reason why it might be slow.

I don't understand why people get such bad results with these CPUs, for me, i can get amazing frame rates in epsxe, pj64, 1964, even GTA III. I just don't get it. It's completely *****ed up for him to be getting 20fps, when i can get 60. Something isn't right. :eyes:

Hehe... Post your plugin settings. Maybe then we can find the answer.

BTW, you have a Geforce4. He has a piece of garbage ATI.

I agree its trash.. but it was the only one that the IBM 2153-e2n Craptiva would support.. others like the GeForce 4 MX420 would not even boot the BIOS

It might be your motherboard, it might not be able to pump the data to the video card fast enough. Is the AGP port a 4xAGP? If it is, you may have to set it in the BIOS so that it's working at 4x instead of 1x.

I think something's holding his system back. His CPU and GPU should be fast enough to handle psx emulation. A K6-2 isn't all that powerful (due to its weak FPU and lack of L2 cache) but at that speed it should be able to handle psx emulation. His videocard is rather slow but it should still be sufficient to handle epsxe. The Radeon 7200 should be about equivalent to a TNT2. I would suggest updating your drivers and directx to the latest versions.

A K6-2 is more than enough. Especially when th fsb is above stock, due to the L2 running at the fsb speed. When i moved from 100MHz FSB to 110MHz, i noticed an immedeate increase in all programs, games, you name it (look at my cc shot above )'

That craptiva motherboard is extremely old. 1 pci slot and 2 isa slots. Probably not intended for gaming whatsoever. If it matters, go out and get a newer super socket7 mobo for about $65 (mine costed that much) I talked to him on MSN and told him how to enable write allocation to the framebuffers. Fps increased alot, so did his benchmark scores, by ALOT.

ok, try using de DX6 D3D Pete's plugin, is the best for poor FPSs solutions, and give a try to another emu, AdriPSX is good in this, then try to change the CDR plugin to pete's (sometimes it cause better FPSs on some places) and, how about overclocking the proc? Im getting out of ideas, I had that proc on a time ago in a crappy sis530 mobo, and still I got better FPSs :P

sowwy if I cant helkp u ^^
