What is 'Reverb' exactly?

I've been wondering about this option for a while now, what exactly is this option for? And what are the differences between the various options you can pick from? (Neill's, Timidy, New, etc)

the Depth of sound itself is what reverb is.

Go stand in a hall and yell, the results are environmental reverb.

I just use the new option.
