Xenogears saving help needed...

Let me describe the problem:

I'm helping a friend play Xenogears, but unfortunately we're having problems saving. After the long intro sequence, we saved-stated (this was on the old EpsxE, btw) for safety's sake, and then attempted to save on the save spot. We got a "save failed" message from the game, after a short delay.

Now, this has essentially continued. We upgraded the emu, no luck. We tried hitting F4 and F5, no luck. What could be causing this?
