Scanlines causing lag?

Hi there, i'm having a bit of trouble with ePSXe. Whenever I enable scan lines it cuts my FPS down to about 30 even at 800 x 600 with no filters, which is odd, because I can run it normally at 1440x900 with the Super2xsal. I'm using 1.7.0 with P.E.Op.S 1.18. My OS is Vista SP1. Video Card is an integrated Intel 945GM with 224mb of shared video memory. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

your cpu is being heavily bogged down in this case, as it is preparing both video, the filter, and processing the emulator core.

I figured as much, it just seems a little odd that it can handle all the HQ filters just fine at maximum resolution, but it can't do scan lines with no other filters in use.

I love scanlines. ^^

I use these settings when running ePSXe on my old laptop 'Pentium M 1GHz, Geforce4 32Mb' (see attached files) and this works pretty well without asking much effort to the cpu and gfx card.

The OGL2 (Pete's OGL2 driver 2.9) config might look best for 2D games, but is nice with texture filtering too (set to 4).

However the D3D one (Pete's D3D driver 1.77) could be more compatible with your Intel 945GM. Still OK with 2D and 3D games I think.

The attached pictures are 640x480, but remember this is fullscreen stretched while playing. Zoom the pics if you want a better idea of how this looks ingame. It's still hard to tell like that, I suggest you try yourself.

he wants to be sure its the D3D6 plugin, since the IGP's on the 945 boards don't support TnL

It's the PEOpS soft dll thats giving me lag. The D3d plug-ins run great, but they give sprites this weird vertical tearing effect. I'll attach two pics so you can see what i'm talking about. First one is with D3d, second one is with PEOpS soft.

Well duh Pete soft is a software plugin meaning its uses CPU
for graphics no wonder that its slowing down to much high filters plus scan line and your CPU not good enough just change either to D3D or opengl no choice here

Actually thats with no high filters, I was saying that it funs at 60 fps with high filters, with no scanlines. But it chugs with scan lines, and no filters.

Well either way CPU isn't meant for graphics thats what we have GPU nowadays
CPU=Emulation+Graphics+scanlines
Either way ur CPU may be to weak especially if its a Notebook would be nice to know what CPU you have

Well what about that:

Use Petes's D3D (DX6) plugin (thanks Squall), keep the 16bit color depht and 640x480 resolution (this resolution is important as it will bring some 'interpolation' = blurriness, and still fill the screen) and no texture filtering at all.

Try the exact same settings (attached picture below) at least those underlined in red (except the scanlines brightness level is up to you) and tell me how you feel about it.
This will look more pixelated but at least the sprites won't have that wierd vertical tearing thing.

If this goes smoothly, set to 32bit color depht, uncheck 'dithering' ans see if there's still no lag.

After that well I have no more ideas, I think Pete's OGL2 plugin is really the best for 2D games as it has the 'low internal resolution' options (see my OGL2 settings) wich allow some good interpolation for low cpu cost.
Are we sure that this OGL2 plugin isn't supported by the Intel 945GM ?

Ok, I just tried PEOpS 1.18 with:

Fullscreen 1280x960x32 + Scale3x (stretching)
Scanlines (double blitting)

FPS ~120 in Strider 1
FPS ~120-130 in Strider 2 (drop near ~70 on briefing screen)

Not much of a change without scanlines.
Without filters though... FPS variates with ~150 in the briefing and between 200 and over 400 during gameplay.

Games:
Strider, was first 2D I could find.
Strider2, good thing it was in the same box. XD

It would seem there's no problem with scanlines itself.

I would guess there might be an incompatibility with your IGP.
Since it really depends on its driver for its performance and capabilities.

same exact problem is happening to me too, glad i found someone else with the same problem.. only happens when i enable scanlines in peops soft plugin , slows down to about 30 fps for absolutely no reason at all

and i have a athlon x2 5600+ processor, 2gb ram, and a ati hd 4670 graphics card , so my system is more than enough...only similarity i see is we're both running vista sp1. my total cpu and ram usage are never above 50% while playing so i have no clue why scanlines is causing this

epsxe does not support multithreading, and is known to suffer performance problems when using load balancing, set the processor affinity to a single core.

also the exact same with me btw... only peops soft is giving me the problem with scanlines.. any other plugin i can put on scanlines and max any other settings with no problem at all... and i can max any setting in peops soft without any problem.... the problem only happens when i use scanlines in peops soft where it cuts my frame rate in half and everything is in slow motion

edit- oh well, guess i'll have to live without scanlines or use the hardware plugins for scanlines now until someone fixes this
