Save States and Memory Card data dissapearing

I was playing legend of dragoon and at one point I saved my game via a save state. When I turned my comp on today to play it the save state wouldn't load and when I cycled through the save states it was just a picture of static. To make matters worse both of my memory cards were completely empty. I had some issues with corrupted files on my hard drive and ran a disk check to fix them, which I suppose may have had something to do with the problem but if there's something I can do to prevent it I would like to know.

backup your memory cards often, loading a corrupt save state will 9 times out of 10 destroy the memcards as well.
