Just some Xenogears shots I took. This used to be my favorite game (or favorite plot, anyway), but on my second playthrough, I payed a lot more attention to the story details due to reading reviews and hearing others' opinions. It did completely fall apart on the 2nd disc. About five dungeons were snipped, an epic 500 year war's final battle was summed up in a minute with a very cheesey Power Rangers-esque fashion, and plot sequence animations were transformed into cookie cutter backdrops with just sprites and dialogue boxes. Worst of all, this went on for a good 10 hours into the second disc.

Still a great game and I hope they remake it to do that second disc justice.

Anyway, I didn't start taking screen caps until relatively late into the game, so most of these are from Shevat onwards (sans the few from the intro which I went back and replayed). Why, you ask? I upgraded my 5 year old system halfway through this playthrough and decided to take some screen caps 'cause everything looked so nice compared to the original non-emu PS version! I'm using Pete's OpenGL 2.8 plugin, with GLSlang shader set to maximum.

I got most of the cool scenes I came across, but I wish I would have caught one from the ending with Fei, Elly, and Krelian. I liked those scenes.

Spoiler alert!

These screens look amazing, its like the shader was made for this game.
I've finished Xenogears about 3-4 times and it still amazes me.

Now, if I had the means to play the 3 successors...

Most of the shots look better in action.

If you want to support the developers and propogate games like Xenosaga you should really buy them retail. That series didn't sell too well after the first installment, and could have used all the help it could get. I don't even think the games are in print anymore though. IMO the first game is the only one capable of being "great," but the following ones just dillied around with the same characters and there was no tie in with Xenogears. So, it was "the awesome Xeno continuation that never was."

Well, I have the first Xenosaga already imported.
But with my PAL PS2 I'm obviously not allowed to play my game ><

As I'm not going to modchip the console there's one option left to play it.
I'm really waiting for that new pcsx2

wasn't supposed to be a continuation but a prelude -- think of it as Star Wars: KotOR is to Star Wars Episode 1-6.

And the 2nd and 3rd games were bad...well the 2nd was, the 2nd was so bad I didn't even bother with the third.

IMO the 3rd is the best of the 3.

You really should play the 3rd... It's nothing like the second.

I know this, as Xenogears is #5. There was also a #6 planned. The problem with the Xenosaga games is that they all focused on the same set of characters. XS would have been far more grandiose/interesting if switched focus to a different time period or something with new characters for each installment, and if it DID tie in with Gears. I still liked XS, just because there aren't many games like them. As I said, 1 was the best but the ending was absolute crap. It should have ended that section of the story (e.g. incorporate both II and III into one game) and then moved on with the Zohar. I mean, AT MOST limit that section of the story to two games.. so, XSIII should have been a fresh set of characters and scenarios.

#3 was a step up in terms of gameplay, but it still did nothing for the series. The last portion of 1 (not ending the "Shion" section of the story) ruined the chances of the future games being excellent.

Xenosaga Episode III is the best RPG in years, and it ranks up there with Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI. That's all that really needs to be said about it. I and II may not have been great but III is amazing.

What GLSlang shader is that? The Pete's OGL 2.8 I have didn't come with any.

The third episode is awesome. The music is the best I have heard in years and it even ranks as second in my personal collection of Osts just beside Chrono Cross'

The gameplay while using gears is addictive as opposed to episode 1.

And the third one DID tie with Xenogears but you have to think a little. I'll post the reasons later.

If you guys are going to replay Xenogears, I suggest you patch it up! Home of the Xenogears 2.0 patch

I am gonna try and replay it now using Pete's OGL 2.0 with shaders on. I will tweak with some shaders and see what best fits. Should be interesting I suppose...

As for Xenosaga III > they did that right. Most problems with I and II were fixed in III, and plot was as good as ever. I say you should definetly give it a try.

I'm about to replay Xenogears as well, thanks for the heads up about the patch, _E_!

But I'd like to ask you guys which shaders/config I should be looking at. I haven't touched psx emu in a long time, so I'd appreciate the help. Right now everything is default except for Eternal for SPU with XA enabled, and I've got Pete's OpenGL2 with the following settings:
Quote:
Resolution/Color:
- 1680x1050 Fullscreen - NO desktop changing
- Internal X resolution: 2
- Internal Y resolution: 3
- Keep psx aspect ratio: on
- No render-to-texture: on

- Filtering: 6
- Hi-Res textures: 1
- TexWin pixel shader: on
- VRam size: 256 MBytes

Framerate:
- FPS limitation: on
- Frame skipping: off
- FPS limit: Auto

Compatibility:
- Offscreen drawing: 2
- Framebuffer effects: 3
- Framebuffer uploads: 1

Misc:
- Scanlines: off
- Mdec filter: on
- Screen filtering: on
- Shader effects: 0/1
- Flicker-fix border size: 0
- GF4/XP crash fix: off
- Game fixes: off [00000000]
Is that config good? Should I change anything else now before adding shaders? If not, which shaders would best suit Xenogears? I've never done shaders before because I've never had a rig that could handle it, but now that I have I might as well take advantage of it.
