Smile Perpetual Photography Thread

With plans of going to Tokyo in March for a holiday, the aim being - to get "adjusted" to the culture shock prior to moving out there permanently this year, I have aquired my first digital camera.

My old camera is some dodgey one that uses film, its been well used - however I'm terribly forgetfull when it comes to getting the film processed. Given I'm very often at my computer, a digital camera will do just the trick.

So today in blustery cold British winds I tried out my new Nikon P5100, not particually fussed about ISO, exposure, focus etc I took some snaps (hell it was so cold, the less fiddling the better!)

I hope that this thread perhaps can be used as a Mecca for budding photographers to show off their homeland, holidays and "talents" in the art of taking a photo. I intend to take a mountain of SD memory cards with me to Tokyo (and surrounding Japan) and show you guys Hello Kitty Bondage Hotels, and general Urban life.

Perhaps alittle knowledge can be imparted to, I'm fairly certain people can pass on tips relating to exposure, action shots, shutter speeds..etc etc

For the technical specs:

Name: Nikon P5100
Type: Compact Digital Camera
Megapixels: 12.1
Image Sensor: 1/1.72in, CCD pixels 12.42 million
Focal Length: 7.5 - 26.3 mm
ISO: 64 - 3200

Sounds like a plan by the way, am I reading right, twelve megapixels ?
an external portable hdd might be more advised (like those they use in safaris, sd cards could be unloaded onto these easily)

Yup, these photos where originally taken at 4000x3000, obviously reduced for forum posting.

Interesting thread. Hopefully I will post some pics that I've taken in the past and in my photography/digital photography class. My photography professor bashed me big time for taking sunset pics and lake scenery pics like yours. He said that they looked like stuff that's on a Hallmark card. He also didn't like pictures of babies, cute animals, pics with objects centered in the middle, and snapshot portrait pics. He said that pics of babies and cute animals was a cheap way to get people to pay attention to your pics and doesn't require any artistic skill to take those kind of pictues. He was a very tough professor. I don't know how I passed that class.

I myself just absorbed a bunch of tips for a few years, with non-disappointing results
you just need to get creative with the subjects and surprise viewers whatever it takes.

My first time using the camera's Manual mode, leaving shutter, aperture and ISO totally in my domain. Admittedly I left the camera's focus down to the 9 quadrant, auto macro mode.

Handheld, which made longer exposures tricky as I was knelt taking these shots, but this is my first time, and fairly pleased with the colours etc...got hungry looking at these ..so ended up running out of "material" to shoot

Oddly enough, whilst the over exposed shots bleach the colours, I prefer the result.

I had some photography lessons this semester. I had a Nikon D70S

I only tried few things with shutter speed and aperture and some settings with the lens.

First two pic is the aperture. Giving a sense of depth and steering the attention of the people towards the flower. Last one is a pic with showing effect of light on objects.

If i ever get serious with making photographs i want to make a pic like this

Iirc it's achieved by having a long exposure time on the shutter.
And nice pics on the falling water pic

Looking forward to your pics of Japan.

Love the bottle image, caustics are always nice to photograph.

Yeah long exposure shots create those famous "light trail" images so often used in videos and shots like that. I intend to do several of Tokyo from my hotel, my hotel is fortunately in Akasaka, near Roppongi and with views of Tokyo Tower.

Wish I had a mates camera, he had one with totally manual shutter speed, he could expose the film for hours if he wanted, used it to take shots of us playing pool..for the entire match, created some excellent images.

Sounds cool. I can't really visualize how that would look. But if you can get a hold of the picture i would like to see how it turned out.

And good luck with taking the pictures in Tokyo. How i envy someone going to that expensive city. And i'm sure a lot of people here are

Looking forward to the pics. And don't forget to make some pics of kawaii girls to for us
