And ya...the pics are awful. But can't expect much better from a webcam.

What are the differences anyway? Is it the image on the top side of the discs?

I'm looking forward to my new game, just managed to buy a sealed copy of Skies of Arcadia, NTSC. Mainly because I had to choose between RGB Scart @ 50Hz, or Composite @ 60. On top of that Pal doesn't support VGA either, so it was an easy decision. Next on the list: a VGA cable.

the discs are usually printed with the "silver" on the top rather than white. and there is the ugly green artwork on the outside as well. some games, like GT2, have different versions as greatest hits, but AFAIK Xengoears is exactly the same.

Xenogears is a damn fine game. I cheated on it so i could replay it just reading the story, no fights and all i have to say is What a story. It's been 50 hours of just story, no gameplay. When there will be another game like this?

Finally, it's HERE

The Settlers II: 10th anniversary

Bought the game this morning at Mediamarkt, for €38,- while two days ago they said it would be €44,- in some add I saw, so I saved myself some money I can spend on beer tonight.

The game comes on only 1 cdrom, and the system requirements were lowered since the demo release. Also I added the second shot for Samor.

The only negative thing I can think of is the boxart. The front is pretty much perfect, but the backside looks like a lowres overcompressed Jpeg image. You can even spot compression artifacts and count the pixels, a very bad job on this one. But meh, that's nitpicking, I'm gonna enjoy the game now.

Oh and for Metalmurphy, Omegainf and others interested in this game, here are some of the final changes taken from the readme:

Quote:
If you hover the mouse pointer over a soldier or above the soldier icon in a military building, a tooltip appears displaying the current number of life points (hit points) / maximum number of life points.

The geologist no longer reports finding a water vein, as these exist everywhere and a well will yield water wherever it is built.

When on a construction site, you can now jump to a goods item currently in transport to the site by clicking the respective goods symbol. Thus you can find out how far away it is from the construction site. If no goods needed for construction are displayed, this means that all goods required are already on the construction site.
The only thing I wish they'd have added is the option to get back the food that's stored inside of a mine whenever you decide to take it down because no minerals are being found anymore.

Nice catch as well Cid .

I play a bit of settlers but the game never occurred to me really. Not my type of game play -_-. The DS version looks like poor on the DS if you ask me. Looks just like the old settlers 1 from dos (or likewise) Given the 3d possibilities, why not make it better looking? Lazy devs

Yeah the DS version is indeed a direct port of the 10 year old version, but they might add online gameplay though. And it's not like the old version has lost its charm. The problem will be that young kiddies won't be wowed so most of them won't be very interested.

You got that right. Although I might not be a "young kiddie" but I'm not planning of getting this whatsoever. Got over games on my list . Not too sure why are they doing it for DS? PSP could have more success with this game but i guess the overall sale figures and touchscreen say it for themselves.

Seeing how they will use one screen for gameplay and the other for all the menus I think it might work out. And with the psp they would've had to redo everything in 3d for sure. DS is probably easier to develop for in this case.

I guess that why. Playing a strategy game on PSP with that one analog stick (wanna-be ) it would be quite tricky. On the DS you might get the option to switch view and such.

I can't exactly post a picture of it other than a screenshot, but I bought Defcon over steam for $15. Awesome little game, definitely check it out.

Look what I found today

I got Skies of Arcadia last week, the cable came in this tuesday, and the japanese games are Tokyo Extreme Racer 2 and Frame Gride.

I wanted the American version of SoA because the PAL one doesn't support 60hz and VGA. The new cable gives some really great results on my 17" CRT. Everything is a lot sharper, though I don't really like the effect on Shenmue 2 because of there being too much shimmering in the game, and it also makes the jaggies more visible. DC's AA was good enough for tv to cover up where it failed a bit, but on a monitor it's different. Skies of Arcadia on the other hand looks a lot better on CRT mainly because of the textures not having the shimmering and the AA working a lot better. I can't wait to test Sonic Adventure 2 or Jet Set Radio with it.

Yeah, Shenmue looks very sharp, but admit it, no regular (like in, non flatscreen/hd etc.) TV is ever gonna give a picture that clear.

Also, congrats on the games
I don't know Frame Gride at all, so let me know if it's good

Tokyo Extreme Racer 2 is one of the top DC racers though, and Skies of Arcadia is a very good RPG... I played a part of it and found it really enjoyable.

I also got a new game myself, MGS3 Subsistence... I'd been eagerly anticipating this one for a while... I would have imported it, but then I wouldn't be able to play MGO (Metal Gear Online), so I had to wait for the PAL release.

Pictures show the box... of course the text on the back was just taken from the US version and translated (into Dutch), since apparantly Metal Gear was never released in Europe and the manual says the MSX is a Japanese console. hm... ah well. What's worse is that they translated the word "deathmatch" on the box into "doden strijd". Aside from sounding dumb, everyone in the Netherlands would just call it a deathmatch. Strange really; the Dutch normally like to absorb more and more english into their native language, yet things that are supposed to stay in english are translated =P

Of course I immediately popped in disc 2 (MGO and the old MSX games)

As usual with the bigger titles on PS2, the game uses an adjusted fullscreen PAL mode (no borders). That's great, but:
The MSX remakes run at their NTSC speeds, yet are displayed at 50hz. Sega did the same with Gamegear games in the PAL version of Sonic Mega Collection. Fortunately, Metal Gear is not Sonic, and the games don't use any scrolling at all, so it's not really a big deal. Metal Gear 2 actually still runs smoother because the real MSX had trouble keeping that at a decent pace.

I'm ~1/3rd into the first Metal Gear and already noticed tons of little changes and fixes to the games. (one example in a screenshot: the game now reports when you picked up a maximum number of items - in the original it would keep picking up but not adding the count anymore). They're not just dumb ports with a translation pasted on, they fixed up a lot of things too! Quite a few SFX in Metal Gear were also changed, funny is that one sound effect it uses is actually one that would normally be done with the special soundchip used in Metal Gear 2 (the SCC). Speaking of that, the music in MG2 seems really well reproduced; the SCC even makes a little bit of noise like it does on a real MSX (in most emulators it sounds much cleaner, but it's not supposed to be like that).

A nice touch is the inclusion of the MSX2 bootscreen when you start the old games. It really seems to be added as a little homage; the Konami intro logo was removed from the games (probably because of the logo change a few years ago), yet they specifically added this in.

Played a bit of MGO too, and I really have to get used to it, but it seems real nice.

Images of the box and 2 screens from the first Metal Gear (taken directly from TV, so sorry for the quality).
(if you look carefully, you can see bleem! GT2 in the background of the photo's )

nice games cid! what kind of vga box is that? never saw one like that at all. I always wanted frame gride, I remember reading a positive review a long time ago. and JSR looks amazing on VGA... very clean, crisp lines on the characters.

It's hard to fill Industrian's shoes....

Shutokou Battle 2 (Tokyo Extreme Racer 2) for DC was a tip from Cid Highwind. The guy he got it from had another, and I won that; 6 euros.

Also got the classic Destruction Derby (PS1) for 2 euros. Many like part 2 better, but I always preferred the first... I did play it before, quite some years ago, in the form of a buggy cracked PC version.
