that PS2 DOA2 sure looks ugly . im not sure how the DC version will look if we hook it up to something as precise as componenet cables (i only have component for mine DC).

Well tbh I always preferred the DC version because it didn't have those rather annoying effects during the final fight. But this is almost as bad as the horror that is Rayman 2 on PS2, boy did they rape that game

Oh and about that site you linked to. I think he has something wrong:

He blames the washed out images on lower contrast, however I think it is just a matter of worse textures, something he has listed in the cons of the DC version... weird if you'd ask me.

DD: Just try a VGA box, it will show the stuff as it was meant to be without hiding the negative aspects. I remember Samor telling me about the skies in Shenmue showing their lack of quality because of them being just an image. Shenmue 2 uses textures.

Doesn't the DC have a native VGA-out? And wouldn't that be better than component?

Two words: Grandia 2.

I've never played the DC original, but the PS2 had totally awful slowdown, especially in the scenes with Selene and her knights. Man, I remember almost breaking my controller playing that. I have the PC version right now (still to play it) but I hope it's better than the PS2 one.

i heard the PS2 version of MDK2 was also bad. same with Le Mans racing . bad framerates and bad textures !

as for the vga idea (i dont think vga is better than component though), i guess that is true i could get an idea but i dont want to buy a dc vga box right now just to test it. so if anyone can give an impression of how it looks that would be great

This is just for Samor BTW.

If these screens look kinda darker, it's because for some reason Dscaler saved the screens as JPGs. Normally they're TIFs. I'll have to fix that.

And yeah: the new faces suck.

And Industrian, I never imagined DOA2 on the PS2 look that bad, a tv with composite cables can hide a freaking lot, that's for sure.
indeed, looks horrible... wonder why that is. I can't recall it looking like that when I did a direct comparison between the two, but I forgot what equipment I exactly used at the time (I think SCART?). They're sharp images though.
As for DOA2 DC on a VGAbox, I can assure you that even though that's about the sharpest you can get with a DC, it's not jagged like those pictures.... maybe DOA2 suffers from a similar "problem" as Ridge Racer V (that game is unbelievably jagged, even for a PS2 game, and Shadow of the Colossus has this as well).

yes, le mans ps2 is horrible; the pc version is a ps2 port, and even worse
DC vga is sharp; the DC uses true VGA output, meaning it runs on a PC monitor in 640x480 like a PC would. What's very noticeable is that the DC has a much brighter output than about every PC

awesome
Nice to see the MSX boot screen - now the world will know it was the MSX who had the original 2 Metal Gears, and not the NES
The new font is bad, but it's a properly translated Metal Gear! That's awesome in itself.
And hey, MG1 Solid Snake kept his old face

A few questions:
-The original MG2 Solid Snake has two intro movies (if you don't press start at the beginning). Are they still there (and is the old Konami logo in there) ?
-Do the games appear to be running smooth (I know it's harder to tell with games that don't use any scrolling) ?
-How's the music in both games? Especially in MG2, because there are very few proper emulations of the SCC soundchip it uses around...

now I'm really starting to wonder.....
I usually use SCART cables... I do have s-video ones as well (and the crap standard cables, of course). Maybe I should try a few games with both, and also use the TV-card to make some good comparisons....I'm getting the idea that some games can display very different quality depending on the setup.

And wow, DOA2 really looks bad.

You know what's worst? I'm using s-video with my tv card and Doa2 looks good, not as jagged as Industrian's pictures. I'll post a few pictures tomorrow because right now "I feel asleep".

Check the screenshots. Listen to this whilst reading for the true experience.

The games run quite smoothly.

And the music is still good. I got spotted by a guard in MG just to hear Red Alert! - that song kicks ass.

BTW: I still get my ass kicked in Solid Snake. It's quite a hard game. But at least I only have to press one button to crouch.

And it just hit me whilst writing this. Right now I have a net connection. My PS2 has an inbuilt network adapter ... WTF didn't I play online?

IMO, they should have thrown in Snake's Revenge and Ghost Babel (which actually is a great game - it's stuck in my GBA) to the package. That would have made it good for us completionists.

I gotta find a remedy for DOA2. BTW, I have the "Hardcore" version.

Ah, the demo's in full effect
It's nice to see they put so much effort in these (I don't like the new faces that much either, but they actually bothered to do all that); and it seems they changed the mark on the cigarettes

Agh...why can't that European release hurry up?!
uhm... is it considered weird to buy it now and again in September? =P

I sense a DC vs PS2 discussion is coming up again

DC is at a constant 60, also at those scenes, at least that's what I remember of it. I remember seeing it thinking it was an N64 port

Rayman 2 however was hyped up to be way better than the DC version and when we compared it it ran between 15 and 30 fps all the time, with hideous graphics. It was released a lot later than all the other versions, but man did it suck. Of course all reviews told you different, 'just because' it was on PS2 and who would dare to rate it low

Just check the review of Le Mans

It features more cars, tracks, and an updated team roster, and its graphical presentation has naturally mutated in the transition. Now, textures are sharper, light sources more prominent, and effects more plentiful all around. Conversely, colors seem a bit more washed out. The core of the game, however, has changed little--Le Mans 24 Hours is just as meaty an experience as its predecessors.
Like WTF
I checked their screenshots and even on their crappy shots I can see the DC textures look a lot better. Also, what they say about washed out colours and higher texture quality sounds very contradicting if you'd ask me. -_-

Anyway, keep the screenshots coming Industrian. Hopefully I'll get my new games soon so I can post pictures of them as well.

I busted out some more PS2 games for trial. Here's Shadow of the Colossus. Never played the game before but I can see myself playing a lot of it during the summer. It just has "epic" stamped all over it.
