HDRI (High Dynamic Range Image) is an extremely usefull method of producing 'realistic' lighting and GI (Global Illumination) in 3D Studio Max R6 (or above), either with Mental Ray / Scanline / Brazil renderers.
Been teaching myself the basics of setting up a scene to use HDRI. Rather good fun, and if your a 3D modeller looking for that extra sexy realism, then well worth learning. A general simple explination of HDRI can be found here

Gonna show this to a friend who works with 3dmax 6....But dont know if he´ll ever use it. He mainly render buildings....

The HDRI out scene I am working on atm looks eerie with 'realism', esp when I put my 'Jessica' model into the scene, but she consists of 206,048 polys (clothing etc). Need to tweak the hair / skin shaders for her, but each frame takes 34 minutes to render, and doing the animation is a bytch with those 'per frame' render times.
