Lossy PNGs

It seems someone has come up with a way to make lossy PNGs. So far it has no real advantage over other formats, but it has the potential to become an alternative to JPGs. The JNG format already covers this territory (combining PNG with JPG), but has almost no support (for creating, nor viewing). The JPEG2000 format is also an alternative to JPG, but (like JNG) has very little support (especially in browsers). Lossy PNGs on the other hand, can be read by any program that can read a standard PNG (which is pretty much everything currently on the market). I put up a page about lossy PNGs, including a number of samples: http://allspark.net/cypherswipe/lossypng.html

Doesn't seem to great. Increased file sizes and more quality loss? Eh, what's the deal?

In it's current form, there is little advantage to it. The only current advantage is the ability to use true color PNGs with alpha transparency on a webpage, without the massive filesize of a lossless true color PNG. The big deal however, is the potential. If this guy can get the quality/filesize ration closer to that of JPGs, lossy PNGs could replace JPGs.
