its only 45kb, couldve gotten it to 35 but there would have been some quality loss. It's not like 45kb is an insane amount, anyone who still uses 56k these days is probably an aol-er (which by default makes them unwanted in most places anyways), and im personally tired of taking the quality out of everything to appease a few, even if it's just a tiny insignificant picture, i'd rather make something that looks good than make a thumbnail of something that would look good. The dimensions are a little bigger than here but nothing you cant scroll over easily, most people today should be running on 1024x768 or above, in fact most good monitors made today are meant to run in 1600 x 1280 or even higher, besides ive seen people with sigs that are 100 pixels high but have a friggin essay written in them making them half a page long alone (and thats for me with 1280x1024 resolution) about which nobody says anything because it's not a picture, its one of those stupid issues ive argued about countless times which i dont have the energy for anymore especially here. While we're on this whole size issue it might interest a few people that there's at least one semi-frequent poster i know who's had a sig about 65kb in size for over a year now i believe who hasn't been asked to change it because nobody even notices it, and who isnt an admin or mod (last time i tried to remove an admin's sig for exceeding the limits it led to a whole argument that pissed me off so much i left the admin team, and almost left in general, anyways back to the discussion) point is, the dimensions don't tell the whole story of filesize which is really the important part of sigs
if you have to know, the forum is kaizoku fansubs, the translators of one piece which is pretty much the only anime i watch now (and dont say i've seen that on the saturday morning fox lineup because the fox dubs are a bastardized version of it)... the limits there are 650x350 (maybe a little tall i'll admit but it doesn't interfere with the reading one bit imo) and 75kb (which is a lot more than necessary but enough not to waste a megabyte on every stupid animation you see

i hope that thoroughly answers your question and inferred thoughts, with my 2 cents added in

From a desktop point of view I don't know how people survive with a resolution that high. Everything is so small!

My tiny signature is actually 57kb... what do you guys use for picture compression, because photoshop is absolutely awful at it?

Strider: I have to agree with what you're saying. Its unfair to inconvenience everyone just for the small few with 56k (though there are a few admins with 56k, bositman recently got broadband a few months ago... or was more than that). Though most AOL'ers skip the rules and their CP setup and land running in the PCSX2 forums.

lol, that one i didnt even notice i meant someone else

to compress... you can use photoshop normal jpeg compression, you can save for web with it which allows you to control the compression settings, and you can use imageready to optimize to file size (my favourite method)

thats actually not really what im saying, it is kind of fair from one point of view, i just find it annoying

He's using IE, which has ****-ass PNG display methods. Transparency looks as gray in that PoS

I agree, Strider.. We've been gone past the 56K age by now. Thats like saying people shouldn't develop computer games for newer machines because some people still cant afford anything more then a very low end one.

I even believe i had some good points to allowing slightly larger sizes, but the threads were closed 5mins later anyway, so its not like anyone noticed or could donate some advice of his own

150px, slightly before the rules were set down to 130.

it wasnt even really said what was the limit but most people used 150... site hosted sigs i believe were maximum 100, but if you hosted it offsite you could go anywhere reasonable.

If you're a 56k user though you gotta figure, you can turn off sigs and images so you dont take 5 mins to load up a page, so its not like we really should have to make tiny tiny sigs, but the filesize isnt even what i have a problem with, 25kb is enough to make a sig 500 x 300 imo, but the point is for me that they have to be so thin
if youre gonna support saying that sigs should be kept low for 56k users then why not support a text only version of the site in general, for the 28k user, or the 14k user, why not allow them to get rid of any graphics whatsoever, just have a big table with the name and the text... seems kind of stupid to force people to go all the way back, but its ok to give them the option isnt it? there is an option to disable sigs here, its not like people cant use it

but like chaosblade said, trying to change anything here is like trying to change the constitution, you need hordes of support, tons of luck, and then 15 years of time pending that someone in charge actually looks at it
