I don't work with realism, so I'm not sure how much help I could be on the topic. But from what I observed from your picture, you put to much shading into it. When you work with realism, something that you should do is not try to paint every last detail down. Because it won't look right. Consider this, do you think your eyes would be able to pick up that kind of lighting and shading on a actual female? Of course not, what makes realism art good is that the artist can simulate what the eyes see on the canvas.

I can't really pin down whats wrong with the face. But I think its a combination of over shading and un- proportional facial features like the eyes. I feel that they are a bit to big and dark, perhaps if they were a bit smaller and could see the white of the eye then they would stand out more. Also the shading around her nose and her nostril shapes gives her nose and over all face a odd appearance. It makes her look very old.

This was always my problem with realism, I wanted to put down each and every last detail. So it never turned out right, plus I found proportions, lighting, shading and perspective extremely limiting. So I dropped all of that in favor of a free flowing style that has no limitations.

Hope what I said helps you.

I think you're right here, I'll have to tweak my shadows and some shapes until it looks natural... it will take a while ^^' thanks for the advice

I wish I could do that too, but somehow I always end up going for semi-realism even when starting with manga style in mind -_-

"Hope what I said helps you."
It does, thanks

This is a logo for a purse company I made awhile ago. I had fun doing this one or at least most of the time I did.

You have a hard time doing free flowing art because you have conditioned yourself to realism. What this means is that you unconsciously shift to realism even if you are trying to do something else. Patterns are hard to break.

Thanks, but its not finished and I don't think it ever will. I'm really trying to move to something different and less complex but just as expressive. Could take a while though..lol.

Yeah that's it. If at least I was good at drawing the way I do... -_-

BTW, your logo is pretty cool, but aren't those usually supposed to be simple and easily recognizable? It's too nice and detailed to be a logo

Here's my latest major update, I think I messed up with the face :s
Just some suggestions (personal opinions xD):

You can:
1) Lighten the eyebrows a bit
2) Make the jaws thinner
3) make the nostrils less visible with thinner nose
4) maker her right eye (our left) eye more perspective (more from a side view)

Hope these might help ^^

Sorry... Mmm... here are some things I realized for myself:

1) Human skin doesn't look absolutely pink or red. They look kind of red-orange at most. Most of the time, you can see that the skin reflects some kind of yellowish orange color. Of course... under different lighting conditions, the colors change, so pay attention to the kind of light you have. For example... in a white environment, it reflects orange... but in a gray-ish environment, it reflects a somewhat blueish shade of orange.

2) Shadows on the human face are not extremely dark, since the skin is not just glossy, it's very reflective, and light bounces a lot on it from what I can see. It's like having a thin metallic coat on top... and a very thick glossy layer underneath. That said... the thin layer on top is only visible around the edges (thus in intense lighting conditions, the face looks like it's glowing... but it's actually not) while the rest looks glossy.

3) When you are drawing the face, it's generally better if you realize that... it's not blurry, and the less amount of shadings on it, the better it looks. Although it's hard to define the shape without line art over. o.o Best way to do it is to just put in the parts that are most intensely shaded, mainly the areas with the darkest shades of the shadows on the face. As for the rest, just shade it with a color slightly darker than the main color, so slight that it's unrecognizable.

It depends a lot,,, whatever it is a black man, white man, asian man, there are a wide range of different colors, I swear some englishmen have pure white skin!, some asian really have yellow one,,, some from africa have coal black,, there are really a lot of color intervals for skin.

@runawayprisoner
Well, for the skin color I was already aware of that, but I like to make them a bit surreal for some reason. Call it strange choice of style if you want ^^ for the reflectivity and shading parts though, what you said is interesting, I'll try to remember that in future works. Thanks for the advice, it helps more than just mocking me without any kind of constructive comment ^^'

@CR
Quite true too. Anyways, in photoshop there's a wonderful thing called Curve layer that's pretty nice for correcting colors easily without having to paint all over again ^^

They all should have some shades of orange in general... for some reason, as far as I can see. Also, the light intensity will also have an effect on the saturation of the color as well. Some white men have really white skin due to that very reason.

Edit: Something interesting for you (Mr. Killjoy) to note: Ramadear's style makes the faces look really good, due to the fact that:

1) There's very subtle to no shading on the face.
2) The lines clearly define the shapes of the faces with minimal density.
3) Both utilize shades of orange to shade the faces, and apparently, that works quite well in all cases although from afar, the faces look completely white. As long as it's orange, and it's subtle, it will still make the face looks good. Now that's what I call surreal.

His style is pretty different to mine... although some rules should also apply to mine, it's normal for him to shade in orange because the entirety of his work is made of shades of brownish orange ^^ As for the faces, they're mostly white, it looks good because it matches his style but it wouldn't work with mine (at least on my current work).

Well, I'll be working on the clothing for a while now, maybe fixing the face will be done better after I focus on something else ^^'

There's still lot of room for improvment, esp the legs which look bad and don't feel like adding the armor on them before it's fixed, but I hope the face looks better now (although I'll fix her eyes later too)

looks disturbingly manly, you got the face a lot better now though. I think the legs are too far apart and a little bit too thick on the down part especially the right one, the kneecap looks totally weird.

Mmm... suggestions:
1) A more triangle face would be nice.
2) She's too buff. Uhm... less muscles? A little bit? Or at least make them look less thick? I swear she looks waaaaayyyyy bigger than me although she's shorter. o.o
3) Thighs vs arms ratio is a bit too high... uhm... either add more meat to the arms, or reduce the volume of the thighs... whichever one you are comfortable with.

Of course, you don't have to do all of those. They are just... my own opinions.
And finally ChankastRules also sees why I'm scared... lol

What is looks manly? If it's only the face don't worry, all I did for now was to change shadows and fix the eyes. It's not complete yet, I forgot to redraw the brows and eyebrows in a more feminime way for example... anyways, she's a bit like Ripley or Vasquez from Aliens. Female warriors aren't the most girly kind of women

For the legs though, you're both totally right, I think I'll have to redraw them almost entirely just to get their position correctly I could have cropped them out of the screeny but I wanted advice ^^

Thanks for the quick replies

The upperbody anatomy looks pretty nice ^^
but the face seems to be kinda unbalanced on left and right, her left face(our right) is a bit heavier than the left side, and the axis of symmetry is a bit off to an angle.
The neck might look better if it is thinner.
for legs hmmm, try to extend them from the bottom of the torso rather than on an angle might help, methink.
