I was watercooling my Opteron until a couple of weeks ago, then one of my hoses popped off and sprayed water everywhere (most likely due to maintenance neglect). I would love to throw a block on the i7, however I can't afford the same incident happening again anytime soon. Maybe in a year or two I'll reconsider it.

So, I've been having odd little problems with my system that were just intermittent enough to make it near impossible to diagnose but frequent enough to piss me off...and formats and reinstall didn't help. So I decided to rebuild and I took the opportunity to move from my Antec P182 behemoth to a tight, compact Silverstone SG01.

Here's the last peek at the old beast. My 8800GTS was already removed:
(the other card left in there is an Asus Xonar DX and it sounds gorgeous. Add-on sound cards aren't dead yet.)

Here's the new gear! (Yes, I got a new Corsair PSU. Figured it was a good idea since I was having stability issues)

Unboxed:

I started installing my Patriot memory into the new board and one of the sticks felt squishy. I took it out and looked at the heat spreader.
RUH-ROH!!!

Huh....wonder if that was a source of my intermittent little problems. Crap. Okay, it's out. I make a trip to my local computer hardware store and:

We have a new challenger!

I know you envy the handlebars

Ram and CPU on mobo:

Partway through the build. Ready for cards and wiring:

All done!

(Suprisingly, this tiny little case had waaaay more room for that 4870 than my P182 did. lol)

The finished product

You would be surprised at how quietly this thing runs. That 4870 is a beast too.

Hope you enjoyed.

I threw down my old rig and smote it's ruin upon the mountainside.

Sorry....I was watching LOTR while I was rebuilding.

edit: couple more pictures

here's the other side just to show it cabled up nicely:

Here's the Silverstone on my desk with the 22" LCD I also got on boxing day.

That's awesome! If it wasn't for me watercooling, I think I would've gone down the HTPC case style too. Don't need top end parts to enjoy PC games nowadays

Not an HTPC case. Just compact. It's nice because now I don't have to dislocate my shoulder Martin Riggs style just to get at the cables behind the P182, it's now way easier to pop open for a quick adjustment, and it's way easier to lan with the odd time I ever do.

Very nice system .

I had planned on replacing my Opteron system for similar reasons, but I didn't think things would turn out the way they did. The crappy thing was that the watercooling went all bad just a couple of days before I was going to order the new parts .

Bah!! This P5QL-EX is a piece of garbage!! I was hoping to get a modest overclock out of it since ASUS can usually be depended on for decent bios options. Not on this board though. If I even look at the fsb funny the system won't boot and it gives me like no controls.

So screw em. I did some research and it seems that DFI are the only people who get that some enthusiasts like mATX too.

I just ordered this:

DFI LP JR P45-T2RS
No onboard video on this puppy. P45 chipset on a mATX board <3

When I get it I'll be putting this on it:

since it will fit in my case.

This ASUS board is going back

The only good P45 boards for Asus is the P5Q, P5Q-E and Deluxe. The rest aren't worth mentioning

I don't care about box cases being cramped, their just so cool to look at. They look more like game systems than PCs.

Lies! I showed you this back when you asked.

Newegg.com - ASUS P5E-VM HDMI LGA 775 Intel G35 HDMI Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards

RunAwayPrisoner apparently has it with his Q9450. He'd taken it to 4.0GHz (though only runs it at like 3.2GHz-3.4GHz for daily use) and his E8400 on a suicide run to at least 4.5GHz on it. He swears by it being one of the best mATX boards there is.

However, that DFI board looks nice.

Spyhop, the reason the 4870 couldn't fit is because you didn't remove the upper drive bay. if you remove it, a 4870x2 can fit with inches to spare

It fit, it was just very tight.
This case has way more room and is surprisingly easier to work with than the P182
