EA Calls Fox Out on "Insulting" Mass Effect Inaccuracies.

Electronic Arts, likely sick of having their recently-acquired role-playing franchise Mass Effect dragged through the mud on national television, has requested that Fox News Channel correct their error-plagued segment on the game.

In the letter, which cites Kotaku, Jeff Brown, EA's vice president of communications, asks Teri VanHorn, producer of the Live Desk with Martha MacCallum, to clarify "serious errors" the channel made in their Mass Effect story.

"As the parent company of BioWare, the studio which created the game, EA would like you to set the record straight on a number of errors and misstatements which incorrectly characterize the story and character interactions in Mass Effect." The letter starts and then proceeds to outline their very strong case.

►Fact: Mass Effect does not include explicit or frontal nudity. Love scenes in non-interactive sequences include side and profile shots

- a vantage frequently used in many prime-time television shows. It's also worth noting that the game requires players to develop complex relationships before characters can become intimate and players can chose to avoid the love scenes altogether.

FNC voice-over reporter says: "You'll see full digital nudity and the ability for players to engage in graphic sex."

► Fact: Sex scenes in Mass Effect are not graphic. These scenes are very similar to sex sequences frequently seen on network television in prime time.

FNC reporter says: "Critics say Mass Effect is being marketed to kids and teenagers."

► Fact: That is flat out false. Mass Effect and all related marketing has been reviewed by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) and rated Mature - appropriate for players 17-years and older. ESRB routinely counsels retailers on requesting proof of age in selling M-rated titles and the system has been lauded by members of Congress and the Federal Trade Commission. In practical terms, the ratings work as well or better than those used for warning viewers about television content.

The letter goes on to point out that the people who wrapped up the segment with a round table were equally clueless about the game: "They have had zero experience with Mass Effect and are largely ignorant about videogames, the people who play them, and the ESRB system that governs their ratings and sales."

The story wraps up by pointing out how insulting the resulting story was to EA and Bioware and asks, not demands, a correction:

The resulting coverage was insulting to the men and women who spent years creating a game which is acclaimed by critics for its high creative standards. As video games continue to take audiences away from television, we expect to see more TV news stories warning parents about the corrupting influence of interactive entertainment. But this represents a new level of recklessness.

Do you watch the Fox Network? Do you watch Family Guy? Have you ever seen The OC? Do you think the sexual situations in Mass Effect are any more graphic than scenes routinely aired on those shows? Do you honestly believe that young people have more exposure to Mass Effect than to those prime time shows?

This isn't a legal threat; it's an appeal to your sense of fairness. We're asking FNC to correct the record on Mass Effect.

I think this shows that while EA may not be the greatest company (and far from being near that spot) they still have people who care about games, and that they aren't ignoring Bioware and the games they make.

It's nice to see them defending Mass Effect/Bioware this way.

I always skip over Fox News and watch CNN instead, they're bias and controversy, thats their forte in getting viewers and rating.
One famous incident i still remember after 5 year, it happen when their stupid staff announced the innocent newly arrive family home address live, they later apologize for mistakenly for someone else as terrorist living there, the family got threaten by their neighbors and strangers were terrified for their life.

Then the case where FOX announced Bush as the winner to the last years election when so many New broadcast stations said Gore won ( the popular votes ).

Nothing against them, but many pure white neo-replublican conservative christians follow the teachings of FOX news to the letter.

Lots of whom wouldn't want their kids playing Mass Effect once they discovered it allowes homosexual relationships. So FOX is mearly sheltering its viewership and their offspring from the messages portrayed in the game and being influenced by liberal culture into deviating from their parents conservative values.

Either that or the 0.001% chance they got the game mixed up with the notorious GTA.

textbook fear mongering is what it is. fox has no journalistic integrity whatsoever, they are a complete joke and the ass end of the news spectrum and anyone who actually buys into their bs is an idiot.

a few months ago they had some "psychologist" on the air and she was preaching that halo 3 was going to create a wave of violent crime when it got released. yet days later she stated that she had only heard and read about the game 3 minutes before she went on the air and then blamed that bit on fox. which while that is their fault, she wasnt very bright and innocent either becuase on one hand you have someone going on national tv preaching these "facts" about a game she learned about only minutes before. all she did was take what fox told her to say and followed it blindly without ever bothering to see if what she was saying was true. just another talking head in my opinion.

and afterwards on the other you have her saying that she felt it was better to go on the air and ramble about something she didnt know jack **** about and risk putting out false information to a viewing audience rather than not going on the air until she could do some research. she was basically gambling with the truth, and she didnt even care that she was, and she was well aware that she was. which is one of the worst things you could do on national tv. bioware should ****ing sue these people for slander.

Ah I love their logic, it's all so typical. You don't hear them complain about the text options in conversation with Ashly where you say you hate people from other races. Nope, you got it, racism is cool. But when you're having some loving in the game, that's when all hell breaks lose. This game is about the most sophisticated game on the market in terms to story and background, the only games that come close to this in terms of cinematic experience are Shenmue and Metal Gear Solid, and now it's being given such criticisms? Fox, grow up, games have done so ages ago. There's a Mature rating on the game, and as defender of the Christian morale you should push family values, such as being together, and social security such as parents watching over their children. Not something stupid like this.

Mass Effect SeXbox Feud Continues; Fox Responds, Says EA Ignoring Invitations.

The ever-growing controversy regarding BioWare's Mass Effect (X360) and Fox News Channel's gross misrepresentation of the RPG as a graphic sex simulator shows no signs of slowing down.

Despite Electronic Arts' demands that Fox News correct the multitude of errors made when reporting on the game earlier this week, the network now claims that EA has ignored all invitations to appear on-air and set the record straight.

"Fox News Channel has extended several invitations to EA through a company representative to appear on 'Live Desk With Martha MacCallum' to discuss 'Mass Effect' and the segment which aired on Monday," a Fox News representative told MTV Multiplayer. "We have received no response."

The whole affair began this Monday, when Fox News hosted a segment on Mass Effect that involved longtime gaming journalist Geoff Keighley, who had played the title, and five other participants who had not. Baseless accusations began flying shortly into the segment, with Fox News incorrectly claiming that the game featured "full digital nudity and sex."

While Mass Effect does in fact permit characters to engage in sex at certain points, the action occurs off-screen without any digital nudity or involvement from the player.

One panelist even went so far as to compare the title to pornography. "Who can argue that Luke Skywalker meets Debbie Does Dallas is a good thing?" they asked.

Electronic Arts, which owns BioWare, was quick to respond. In an letter to Fox News, EA communications VP Jeff Brown claimed the inaccurate coverage "represents a new level of recklessness" and "was insulting to the men and women who spent years creating a game which is acclaimed by critics for its high creative standards.

"EA would like you to set the record straight on a number of errors and misstatements which incorrectly characterize the story and character interactions in Mass Effect," wrote Brown, who argued that popular Fox-produced shows, such as The OC and Family Guy, were no more graphic or demeaning than Mass Effect. "This isn't a legal threat; it's an appeal to your sense of fairness." This represents a new level of recklessness.
