THQ cancels a bunch of games for various platforms

PS3 Frontlines: Fuel of War Cancelled; Stuntman and Juiced Franchises Dumped.

Today THQ released updated fiscal guidance for 2008, and the news was somewhat mixed. While revenue guidance for fiscal Q3 (ending 12/31/07) is up from $490 million to $509 million, the company is taking an accelerated amortized expense of $20 million related to underperformance of Stuntman: Ignition, Ratatouille and Conan.

The important part for gamers is that the company will also take a $27 million non-cash charge related to the now official cancellations of the PS3 version of Frontlines: Fuel of War and Destroy All Humans: Big Willy Unleashed for PS2. The company has also decided to dump the underperforming Juiced and Stuntman franchises, and apparently cancel two unannounced titles that were scheduled for fiscal 2010 on Xbox 360 and PS3.

The final hit is that the company is closing its Concrete Games studio, which was working on one of the unannounced titles, with "a substantial number of the studio's employees" to be offered positions elsewhere within THQ.

"In October, we announced certain product quality initiatives, including personnel and structural changes in product development and a more rigorous internal and external product evaluation and feedback process," said Brian Farrell, president and CEO of THQ. "Consistent with these initiatives, we have taken actions to strengthen our pipeline and position ourselves to compete aggressively with compelling, high quality games."

Down?

They increased the money revenue they had. They simply are revising their plans because of failures with previous games.

THQ had been releasing sub-par games lately and as they can see, that's not a good way to make money. So they are cancelling games that they don't see fit for release instead of losing more money by completing them, publishing them and then seeing them bomb down.

I don't think they are down, simply trying to wise up.

I always am nervous about buying T-HQ games, I remember the crappy 16bit games on the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis.

I'm surprised that you haven't bought some copies of their games from a dollar store or something.

It'd be nice to think that but the Homeworld series has never been super popular despite its high reviews and praise.

And now days game companies are making even less money on pc games thanks to piracy and the ever increasing dominance of consoles.
