The .hack//GU series

Has anyone played this games? do i need to play the first series to understand this one? i am thinking on getting it but i dont know. It looks like its in the same path of the first one. By that i mean there is going to be lots of sequels. I think there is already 3 out right now. Is the story good enough to get all of them?

You don't NEED to play the first four games, but there are little references here and there to past events, as well as old characters in the new games. If you want to get totally up to speed, watch the collector DVD that's supposed to come with the GU games. You can also youtube it. I forgot the name of the disk though..
