Question FF12 with PS1-Controller?

Hey, I bought FF12 recently and went to a friend to play it right away. But his PS2-Pad is broken so we tried to play it with my old PS1-Dualshock-Controller, but the game won't start unless there's a PS2-pad connected.

Is there any way to play this game with the old pad?

I remember hearing that plugging in a PS1 controller into the PS2 can mess it up a bit...you might as well go and buy a new pad .

Are you serious?
Isn't the PS2 supposed to be able to read PS1-Games as well as PS1-Hardware (in terms of pads in this case)

Well, I've got a new one now anyway.
