Bioshock: letting your household members play it is considered freeloading, says 2K

According to the 2K folks, your family should buy additional copies of Bioshock if they wan to play it. EVEN if you have only one computer !!!
Basically, when you buy Bioshock you are the only one allowed to play it since your family would be freeloading if you let them play your copy of it.

Full text here, complaining thread readable here

Hell be with them greedy vampires, daring to speak with smooth fuzzy words !!!

Freeloading? What about this?

- If someone watches one of your DVDs in your salon while you're cooking/working, does that constitute freeloading ?
- Should your cousins be arrested for illegally reading your Harry Potter books? Are magazines legal ?
- Since the 90's, isnt a HOUSEHOLD licence purchased actually, with the person putting its name just acting as the buyer and single point of contact? Why should your siblings buy another copy, when all of you probably play on the same computer?

Seriously, when did perpetual ownership turn into such cr*p? No one should be irreasonable enough to rush buying a controversially DRMed game. Pretty screenshots do not reveal how much people are getting screwed.

2k is out of their ****ing minds. doesnt secuROM limit the installations to 2 (or 5, not that it matters)? if they want you to have a copy of bioshock installed for every individual family member, wouldnt that be capped by the install limit? im sorry but that is just retarded. if they lose customers over this and all of its other anti-piracy crap its going to be no surprise to me. they treat legitamet players like pirates and the only way for them not to is to prove it to them with some picture of the game and yourself. its nuts. these anti-piracy tactics are doing the opposite of what they are made to do, piracy is actually increasing with these methods in place. i like bioshock, and i dont think anyone is complaining about the game itself, but their legal bs that they throw out with it is criminal in my opinion. i paid for the game, not to get ****ed in the ass. i realize these developers have the right to protect their work but this is a textbook definition of overkill.half life 2 and steam is another one. i dont like resorting to actual piracy, i try and avoid it at all costs, but i ended up using a crack because i spent money on a brand new copy of HL2 and i still couldnt get steam to activate it. and i wont even consider buying another copy and trying it again. they are going to see a negitive impact on sales if they keep this stuff up, no matter how good the game is.

They should ban air just the way they are trying to ban P2P!

On a more serious note, these corporate bastards should actually get to know the law a bit better. Here I buy a game, and I'm entitled to do with my copy whatever I want, provided it isn't forbidden by my national laws.

Our laws allow me to lend my copy to friends and family or even complete strangers, because I do not make a duplicate copy of it. I temporary pass on my rights to play the game to another person, perfectly legit.

To those who direct me to their EULA I have only to say that those aren't valid contracts. If they want to force me to sign a contract on how to use an item, they have to do so before I purchase it. If I buy it without any apparent and visible limitations that I'm notified of before I paid for it then it means I get the item as is, making any further restriction illegal, any contract telling me what to do or otherwise needing to return the item can simply be ignored.

Here's a link to the Digg page. Not that I ever visite that site, I just know it's the next big thing since myspace

im not advocating piracy here but i really hope the pirate community sticks it to them on this one. what they are doing to their paying customers should be illegal.

Don't worry, they took care of it already, and I hope it will finally reach these corporate numbskulls that they're pissing off customers.

And Jonc, what they are doing to their customers in fact IS illegal. I can see people winning lawsuits against 2k if some would have the funds to set one up. EULA's are so worthless, they're not even worth for me to use as TP for my bungholio. Meanwhile inside of the package is something that I did not expect to be in there, thus legally speaking I've been cheated.

"The Customer is Always Right", I seem to remember that policy such long ago now completely thrown out of the window due to Corporate greed sitting as a vague voice in the back of my head.

Yeah, we can speak with our spending dollars and not buy this game but the sad truth is they'll blame it on piracy for such low sales rather than admitting they were at fault for pissing customers off.

So much for the ****ty Securom/Activation crap they implemented, only took pirates only 6 days to 1 1/2 weeks to successfully crack this BS scheme and they are now playing the game worry free while the honest and legit users are the ones suffering.

When will the corporate ****heads finally see this crap like this doesn't do jack to prevent or thwart piracy and only encourages it as well as faster developments of cracks?

How come PC users have to deal with bullcrap Copy Protection Schemes While console users don't, can copy, distribute and play games as they please?

... probably 'cos console manufacturers don't include cd burners as standard.

Remember folks, corporate execs tend to make a living out by plotting and scheming, it's not too surprising that their option of mankind is that if everyone can do something then everyone will.

Don't bother replying in that thread at 2k forums on Securom, it seems it's on the 2k Moderators/Admins/Staffs ignore list so they are not able to see it.

I was reading through the thread and saw that members came up with that conclusion since someone posted a link to the crack, another member admitted to pirating the game and they were not warned or banned for it. Also to mention not a single member of the staff at 2k forums has replied in it or replied after a certain extent.

From what I hear, this limitation Rikki is talking about actually contradicts what it says in the EULA. Of course, don't take my word for it, I haven't really read the EULA.

Regardless, it's this kind of ridiculous copy-protection and DRM that turned me completely off from the PC version.

It's sad and retarded that they felt the need to add this crap to the demo as well seeing as how the demo is able to be freely redistributed through the web and Valve's Steam Service.

True, Bioshock's EULA is a contradiction by itself, but I wasn't speaking about Bioshock in particular, but games in general as well

No wonder people turn to console-based gaming. No freakin contracts to sign and rights to surrender
