I guess the first Resident Evil would be the obvious one but how about Doom 3 or The Suffering?

Alone In The Dark: The New Nightmare for Dreamcast has fantastic graphics! Even better than Code Veronica

Siren is a pretty interesting game for the PS2. I know you said games for the PS but I really can't think of any for the PS besides Silent Hill or Resident Evil. It's very difficult which adds to the scare factor. It also has a really creepy storyline. Most of the time, you don't have any weapons and you have to evade enemies rather than fight them. Except for when you're the old guy. Basically it's Silent Hill meets Metal Gear Solid. I never got the chance to beat it because my PS2 broke. I also think that the guy who made the original Silent Hill created Siren.

If u have a nice PC and really want a scare, then I would most definitely recommend F.E.A.R and Condemned - Criminal Origins. If u have a nice monitor and a excellent GPU (Geforce 7900/ATI X19X0) than crank up the settings and turn up the 7.1 Surround sound and it will for sure scare the hell out of you.

You might want to try Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. It's a FPP horror hame, quite good IMO and I pretty enjoyed it on Xbox. It's on PC as well

You still have your gamecube right? If so then you should give "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem" a try. It's one of those games best enjoyed in a dark room with surround sound, mobile phone turned off, enough food and drinks to survive for some hours and optionally a bucket for urine and fecies ;P
Other than that i can only think of Resident Evil 0 which is definitely worth a try if you like the other RE's and the graphics of RE1 Remake

Yeah, RE0 was the first game where I liked in game character models better than the ones on pre-rendered cut scenes

For me that was Resident Evil 1 Remake, i couldn't believe the ingame graphics looked better than the Pre Rendered Intro...

I also remembered some other Games you might be interested in jonc:
Dino Crisis for PSX though it's not that scary. Parasite Eve 1 and 2, again not as scary as Silent Hill.

I read about Fear Effect 1 and 2 for the PSX to be good games too, but i never played them. Another great budget game is "the thing", i remember that i was quite scared because i didn't know what was going on, the designers really know how to build up tension. The game looks quite good while not being too hardware hungry. The controls are very different to Silent Hill though. Still a great horror game.

i think i have a demo of dino crisis around here somewhere, i remember getting RE3 and the demo came with it. ill check out those fear effect games, i remember seeing ads for them in some of my older game magazines and from the screenshots i thought they had a cool way of doing the graphics. i also have parasite eve, i thought it was pretty good and i was surprised square could pull of a game like that considering the majority of their work goes towards RPG's. i dont have the 2nd one though but ill get that soon.
