S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
Yo. Don't think I've posted in this section before
Anyway, I was thinking of getting a game called "S.T.A.L.K.E.R". I don't really play shoot-em-ups at all, but the whole dark chernobyl event and shooting creepy deformed monsters kinda drew me in. I was wondering if anyone else has this game. If so, can you tell me what it's like, and post some of high-res pretty screenshots (YOUR OWN) =) |

I have it and it's brilliant - it has great atmosphere and it's not a typical shoot-em-up - has some RPG elements and good storyline with lots of additional missions. I have very similar specs as You (Athlon XP 3400+, X800XL, 1GB RAM) and unfortunatelly I connot enjoy the full graphic options (turning off dynamic lights does the trick). Anyway, game is worth it's price, it's one of the best FPS for a long, long time (the best since F.E.A.R. I think). Also there's lots of mods (i.e. Realistic Mod or Real name weapons mod, sounds mod) that You can find on the net. If You decide to buy it, remember to install all new patches before starting the game - old saves don't work with them.
Well, to sum up - I've been waiting for S.T.A.L.K.E.R for about 5 years and it didn't disappoint me, so it means it's really good

It's an okay game. Certainly not something I care enough to finish. Pretty ugly looking, and highly unoptimized. I think you'd need at least 2gb of ram to play in the highest setting, but this game looks nowhere as pretty as oblivion which only needed 1gb.

The game's storyline is not the obvious "in your face" type, if you don't mind reading then it's pretty good, if you hate reading lot's of text then this is not the game for you.
As far as shooting goes I have found that slow controlled shots works better than spraying and that the game's realistic ballistic modeling means that bullets will drop in flight forcing you to compensate for that and even the most well aimed shots may not always hit it's intended target, for me it's pretty annoying and yet adds to the tension of combat especially with some fast moving enemies. As far as the general "feel" and styling goes it's pretty much rusted cold war relics from start to finish. The game as a whole is pretty fun and there are multiple endings, I say if you like reading then go for it otherwise avoid it. |
